UOWx activity - EIS Student Mentor Program Mentee

EIS Student Mentor Program - Mentees

Activity overview

How is this program run?

This program is running both face-to-face and online.

What will I do?

If you’re new to the Faculty or Engineering and Information Sciences (EIS) or just looking for advice from a friendly and supporting network then the EIS Student Mentoring program is for you.

EIS mentors are typically final year students who can assist you by:

  • providing advice and helping you to navigate lectures, tutorials and UOW systems
  • familiarising you with your Faculty, School and UOW success and support services
  • sharing their knowledge and experience at UOW and answering your questions
  • developing your support and friendship networks via organising a variety of social and study sessions.

You can connect with a peer mentor online via email, Zoom or on campus whether you are studying in Australia or offshore. The program is open to all UOW EIS current students.

The mentoring program runs over 10 weeks (weeks 2 - 12 of session). You will:

  • Be matched with an EIS student mentor;
  • Agree with your mentor on the amount of time you connect with each other during that period, making it work for both of you;
  • Attend an Orientation session to find out more about the program and mentor and mentee's roles and responsibilities;
  • Meet with your mentor at times agreed;
  • Attend information sessions and/or social and networking events run by the EIS Student Mentor team; and
  • Provide feedback on your experience with the mentoring program via a survey.

How will I benefit?

Participation with the mentoring program is a great way to develop your skills including:

  • Cross-cultural communications skills & intercultural competencies as you connect with other participants from diverse cultural backgrounds;
  • Collaboration and communication skills via attending events & connecting with your peers, and meeting with your mentor to resolve any concerns you may be experiencing; and
  • Wellbeing as you connect with your mentor who can offer advice and support as well as meeting other participants from the same Faculty or School assisting you to develop your own community at UOW and within the Faculty of EIS.
