Please note: this volunteering is with an external community organisation that UOWx has a partnership with. Please contact uowx@uow.edu.au once you have been accepted into this role and UOWx will add you to the Moodle site so you can commence claiming your hours.  


What will I do?

The Multicultural Communities Council of Illawarra (MCCI) Volunteer will be recruited to provide a friendly visit to residents of Commonwealth government subsidised Aged Care Facilities and/or recipients of Home Care Packages in Illawarra that are from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds that might feel isolated and/or have little or no contact with family, friends and/or community.

The purpose of this volunteer role is to alleviate social and or cultural isolation experienced by recipients of Commonwealth subsidised aged care services living in the community (Home Care Packages), and residents of aged care homes whose quality of life would be improved by friendship and companionship. The MCCI team recruits and trains volunteer visitors to visit Aged Care Home residents and Home Care Packages recipients from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds living at home/in the community. These volunteers will be matched with residents of same cultural background, similar language and interests.

Are there any special requirements for this role?

No special requirements, however a police check will be undertaken prior to you commencing in your role.


Minimum requirements for UOWx recognition

To receive UOWx recognition, you must complete the following:

  • An "engaged" student will need to be complete 20 hours over a calendar year
  • A "highly engaged" student will need to complete 40 hours over a calendar year
