Voting for the Academic Senate Committees election is open from 12 pm, Tuesday 26 May and closes 12pm, Tuesday 9 June. The eligible candidates for each committee are provided below, across four committees and six available positions:

My name is Alyssa Afiouni, and I am a Bachelor of Business and Law student at the University of Wollongong Liverpool Campus. Alongside my studies, I actively contribute to university life through several leadership and mentoring roles, including Student Engagement Officer, Law Pod Mentor, and Liverpool Campus Representative on the Student Advisory Council. Through these roles, I regularly engage with students and work closely with university staff to support student wellbeing, communication, and engagement. These experiences have given me insight into the challenges students face throughout their studies, particularly regarding awareness of university processes, academic support, and student representation. My experience sits across several parts of university life. As a research student, I understand the pressures of supervision, progress, milestones, research integrity and examination. As a Sessional Academic, I see how teaching quality, assessment clarity, feedback and course design affect student confidence and success. Through WUPA, WiSTEM and WREN, I have worked with diverse student and research communities and understand the importance of listening carefully before representing others. If elected, I would bring a practical, fair and evidence-informed student voice to the committee. Some of you may already know me from around the university, and also because I have served as a Student Representative for the Bachelor of Nursing cohort in both 2025 and 2026 across years 2 and 3. Through this experience, I have developed strong communication, leadership, teamwork, and advocacy skills while building meaningful connections with students from diverse backgrounds and experiences. Throughout my university journey and clinical placements, I have gained a deeper understanding of the academic, personal, financial, and placement-related challenges students can face. People often say that doing a PhD is tough, but I know something that is much tougher. Doing it in a different country and language. As a second-year international PhD candidate in Marketing, with an interest in frontline employee’s psychological well-being and behaviours, I understand firsthand the challenges HDR students often face, particularly around supervision expectations, academic progress, and well-being. If elected, I am committed to being a trusted “buddee”, for you and for myself, who will represent your voice to develop HDR policies and practical activities that build resilience and help you break up with your all-too-common BUDDEE: burnout, uncertainty, depression, disconnection, exhaustion, and edginess. I am a first-year PhD candidate and Australian Government Research Training Program scholarship holder in the School of Law, Faculty of Arts, Society and Business. My research looks at the growing use of AI and automated decision-making where computers or algorithms make decisions that used to be made by people. I study what the law says about this and whether there are enough protections to keep humans meaningfully in the loop, especially when the outcomes affect ordinary people's rights and access to justice. I am nominating myself for the Research and Graduate Research Committee because I believe the postgraduate student voice must be heard in decisions that shape our research experience. As a first-year candidate, I am navigating the early stages of the PhD journey right now and I understand the challenges around supervision, research training and finding your footing as an emerging researcher. If elected, I will actively listen to fellow HDR students across all faculties and bring their concerns and ideas to the committee. I’m currently in my final year and have spent a lot of time thinking about how we can actually improve the day-to-day student experience and the way we learn here. Throughout my degree, I’ve worked hard to keep my grades high, which has given me a front-row seat to both the parts of our courses that work brilliantly and the areas where students tend to struggle. I really want to take that perspective and use it to help shape our teaching standards and course quality in a way that is actually helpful and realistic. I’m a big believer in open communication and working together to find practical fixes that make a difference for everyone at the university. As an MSc Electrical Engineering student balancing academics, part-time work, assignments, group projects, deadlines, and commuting, I understand many of the everyday challenges students face. I know how important clear communication, fair assessment structures, accessible learning resources, supportive teaching, and student wellbeing are to performing confidently at university. Before joining UOW, I worked for several years in e-commerce operations and product management, where I focused on improving user experience, identifying customer pain points, analyzing feedback, and making digital systems more accessible and efficient. I am a PhD research student in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Wollongong. I bring a strong commitment to student learning, academic excellence, and inclusive education. Through my roles as a Student Partner in the UOW renAIssance initiative, Peer Academic Coach, ITAP Tutor, and educator with extensive teaching experience, I have worked closely with students from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds, listening to their challenges and supporting their success. I am passionate about fostering an inclusive, student-centred, and future-focused learning environment that supports both academic excellence and student wellbeing. My experiences as an international student, educator, and researcher have given me valuable insight into the diverse challenges students face in teaching, learning, assessment, and academic transition. I am a PhD candidate in Computer Science at UOW, a Sessional Academic, and Vice President Research of Wollongong University Postgraduate Associate. I am nominating because I care deeply about making university policies and decisions reflect the real experiences of students, not only formal processes on paper. My experience sits across several parts of university life. As a research student, I understand the pressures of supervision, progress, milestones, research integrity and examination. As a Sessional Academic, I see how teaching quality, assessment clarity, feedback and course design affect student confidence and success. Through WUPA, WiSTEM and WREN, I have worked with diverse student and research communities and understand the importance of listening carefully before representing others. If elected, I would bring a practical, fair and evidence-informed student voice to the committee.
