Study nursing at UOW

Growing up in a rural town myself and being in New South Wales, I was quite interested in regional health. By studying at Wollongong University, I've been able to do a four week placement in Broken Hill and see some of the differences in health care out there. I've also been able to go out to Alice Springs and see different healthcare centres and hospitals there and that's really opened my eyes to all the different things that I can do in rural health.

Complete your Early Years degree in two years

Are you a diploma-qualified early childhood educator? Are you considering undertaking university studies to help advance your career? The UOW Bachelor of Education (Early Years) Accelerated Pathway Program will see you turn your diploma into a degree in just two years. Apply now to start in July.

Regional UOW graduate giving back to his hometown

Michael grew up in Batemans Bay, attending the local primary and high school, and is now proud to be a teacher at a local primary school. Hear Michael reflect on his decision to start studying towards his teaching degree, and why he choose to stay in the Eurobodalla to study.

Learn more about UOW's Master of Teaching

Hi, my name is Michael. I'm a graduate from the University of Wollongong. I studied the Masters of Teaching at Eurobodalla and I am now a primary school teacher.

So I grew up here in Batemans Bay. I went to Batemans Bay Public School and then I was at Batemans Bay High. After I finished school, I wasn't really sure what I wanted to do. I jumped around some retail jobs around the area and decided that I'll give the army a shot. So I did a lot of military training and decided that that wasn't the lifestyle that I wanted to pursue.

I thought back to a time where I did some private tutoring, and I thought, why not turn that into a career? When I decided to study at UOW Eurobodalla it was really a choice that was based around family. So moving to the main campus in Wollongong would have been a major transition. And as a mature aged student, I wanted to keep my base here. I could see myself living here for the rest of my life.

So my experience at UOW Eurobodalla was positive throughout. The staff were fantastic. The tutors were highly approachable. We also had such a wide variety of students here as well, which really sort of fed into each other's knowledge. I could easily just come down from up the road, access the better internet, swipe my card at any time that I wanted to.

Thankfully, that open door policy was there. If you needed that professional help, it was always forwarded to you as an option.

I think the role that regional campuses play in regional areas is really quite important in letting people know what options are out there. You don't have to go to one of the main campus towns to have that same level of education. I hope that regional campuses continue to maintain their place in the community.

Yeah, I do feel like I'm giving back to the community in a sense. I grew up in a community that already afforded me so many opportunities. Being able to work in the public school system and work with students who are just like me is really rewarding.
