The Academy provides an opportunity for all staff to be part of a rich community of practice where expertise can be recognised and utilised to further teaching and learning at UOW.

As a WATTLE member you receive:

  • Access to a community of scholars passionate about teaching and learning in the higher education sector
  • The opportunity to participate in Hot Topic groups that address key Higher Education topics
  • Invitations to WATTLE workshops and seminar series
  • Regular updates on broader teaching and learning events and grant opportunities
  • Opportunities to engage in teaching and learning professional development and recognition mentoring activity

Membership categories

Principal Fellowship is suitable for highly experienced teaching or support staff whose practice involves a sustained record of effectiveness in strategic leadership of high-quality learning. This includes those who have been involved in the strategic development and implementation of inclusive policies, strategies, procedures, or initiatives to enhance practice and outcomes for learners. For such staff, their influence and commitment of teaching leadership have informed improvements and demonstrated the success of students and staff within or beyond UOW.

Evidence related to Principal Fellow level of membership may include:

  • Higher Education Academy (HEA) Principal Fellow
  • External Category 1 Grant Chief Investigator where the grant has a significant focus on teaching and learning within Higher Education
  • Australian Awards University Teaching (AAUT) Teaching Excellence Award recipient (individual)
  • UOW’s Continuing Professional Development (Learning & Teaching) Level 4
  • Other professional fellowships or awards relevant to your current role in teaching and learning at national or international level

Senior Fellowship is awarded to teaching or support staff who have a sustained record of leading or influencing the practice of others who teach or support high-quality learning. It is suitable for individuals whose comprehensive understanding and effective practice extend beyond their direct teaching. For these staff, they have demonstrated a consistent ability to positively lead and influence the learning and teaching practices within or beyond UOW.

Evidence related to Senior Fellow level of membership may include:

  • National Australian Senior Teaching Fellow
  • National Australian Teaching Fellow
  • National Australian Academic Secondee
  • Higher Education Academy (HEA) Senior Fellow
  • Australian Awards University Teaching (AAUT) Citation Award recipient or Program Award Recipient
  • Senior Executive Staff (substantive appointments) with significant teaching and learning leadership roles, for example: Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education)
  • Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australia (HERDSA) Fellow
  • UOW’s Continuing Professional Development (Learning & Teaching) Level 3
  • Other professional fellowships or awards relevant to staff member’s current role in teaching and learning at regional or national level

Fellowship is awarded to teaching or support staff who have a sustained record of demonstrating effective teaching practices that support high-quality learning. It is suitable for individuals who demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of effective teaching that impacts the student experience or has begun influencing the practice of other peers. For these staff, they have demonstrated substantive teaching responsibilities in higher education and have enhanced their practice through continuous professional development and reflection.

Evidence related to Fellow level of membership may include:

  • UOW Vice-Chancellor’s Award Recipients of an Outstanding Contribution to Teaching and Learning (OCTAL)
  • Higher Education Academy (HEA) Fellow
  • External Category 1 Educational Grant Team Member where the grant has a significant focus on teaching and learning within Higher Education
  • Staff with extensive teaching and learning publishing records, i.e. 5 quality SOTL journal articles
  • Staff (substantive appointments) with significant teaching and learning leadership roles in Schools, Faculties or Divisions, for example: Associate Dean Education, Director within a central L&T Unit
  • UOW’s Continuing Professional Development (Learning & Teaching) Level 2
  • Other professional fellowships or awards relevant to staff member’s current role in teaching and learning at the University level

Associate fellow is awarded to teaching or support staff who may be relatively new to a role in teaching and learning or have limited leadership responsibility outside of their direct teaching portfolio. It is suitable for UOW teaching or support staff or students wishing to participate in the teaching and learning conversation and are interested in developing their teaching and learning expertise. Ideally, associate fellows should be those who already create a range of learning environments to engage and promote learning and who use scholarship, professional learning, or other evidence-informed approaches as a basis for their effective practice.

Associate Fellow criteria include:

  • Members of UOW Community wishing to participate in the teaching and learning conversation
  • Members of the UOW Community interested in developing their teaching and learning expertise
  • Colleagues who have previously been professionally affiliated with the University of Wollongong and are endorsed by a current WATTLE Fellow and/or the WATTLE Executive Committee
  • Honorary memberships need to be renewed every 2 years
