Overview

Prepare for a rewarding career as a registered nurse with the Master of Nursing (Pre-Registration). This program combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience, equipping you to deliver high-quality, sustainable care across diverse healthcare settings. Develop critical thinking, tackle complex challenges, and position yourself as a future leader in global healthcare.

The course covers professional nursing subjects, applied sciences, research, and contemporary nursing practices. You'll engage in collaborative learning through simulated clinical labs, interactive tutorials, and 840 hours of clinical placements in various settings and health districts. Please note, travel to different clinical facilities will be required to complete placements.

The Master of Nursing (Pre-Registration), works on an extended academic year. First year commences with an intensive January session followed by Autumn and Spring sessions.

Accreditation & professional recognition

The Master of Nursing (Pre-Registration) is accredited by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) and is listed as an approved program of study on the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA).

Graduates may be eligible to apply for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) through the NMBA, subject to meeting the registration standards, including English language proficiency.

The NMBA requires an overall IELTS score of 7.0, with a minimum of 7.0 in reading, speaking, and listening, and 6.5 in writing. Test results must be obtained within two years of applying for registration. Test results must be obtained within two years of applying for registration. Therefore, graduates will need to undertake another IELTS test to meet these requirements, even if the necessary scores were achieved prior to enrolling in the Master of Nursing (Pre-Registration).

Admissions information

A range of admission options are available for students of all ages and academic backgrounds. The procedures governing admission are defined in UOW's Admissions Procedures, and the UOW College Admissions Policy.

Entry into the Master of Nursing (Pre-Registration) is competitive and places at each campus are limited. If places are full when you apply, your application will remain active and under consideration. If a place becomes available, admissions will assess applications in the order they were received and contact you with an update.

A recognised bachelor’s degree with an equivalent average mark of 60%, completed less than 10 years prior to the date of application;

OR

A recognised bachelor’s degree with an equivalent average mark of 60%, completed more than 10 years ago, plus a completed postgraduate qualification with an equivalent average mark greater than 60%, completed within the last 10 years.

Faculty consideration may be given to applicants with a qualification older than 10 years and relevant work experience.

In addition to these criteria, nursing degrees also have inherent requirements that must be met.

  • Higher Education Study

    Recognised Bachelor's degree with a WAM of 60, completed less than 10 years prior to the date of application. 

    Applicants with a qualification older than 10 years will be considered based on either more recent graduate study or work experience that demonstrated current capacity for graduate study.

  • Work and life experience

    Admission to UOW is primarily based on your academic qualifications, with work or life experience generally not considered. If you do not meet the academic requirements for this course, we recommend exploring recognised pathway programs, such as those offered by UOW College or the TAFE Tertiary Preparation Certificate (TPC).

Compulsory Work Based Placement
Your study program requires you to attend workplace experience or clinical placements within a range of health-related settings, completed over 21 weeks (totaling 840 hours, at 40 hours per week). Before you can commence a placement within a NSW Health facility, you must meet NSW Health’s mandatory requirements for a police check, code of conduct, and immunisation/vaccination.

  • Domestic applicants with overseas qualifications

    If you have completed or partially completed studies at an approved university or tertiary institution, you may be eligible for entry to UOW. You'll need to provide academic records, and your course must be at least one-sixth complete. Non-English documents must include an official English translation. For more information, contact the UOW Future Students Team.

  • English language proficiency

    All UOW courses are taught in English and require varying levels of proficiency. If English is not your first language, you must meet the University’s English Language Requirements, which differ by course.

    Accepted international test results include IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, Cambridge, and OET for specific health-related courses.

    Alternatively, you can fulfill the requirement by completing an English course at UOW College.

  • Workload

    Full-Time Study Load

    As a full-time student, you can expect to commit around 48 hours of study per week. This includes class time and independent study. You may need to factor more time for examination study, practical work and placements.

  • Record Check

    NSW Health Requirements
    The NSW Health Department requires all students undertaking clinical placements at NSW Health hospitals and facilities to:

    • undergo a national criminal record check, and 
    • comply with NSW Health immunisation requirements

    This criminal record clearance will be conducted by the NSW Police and/or the Australian Federal Police. Students are required to arrange for this check to be undertaken following enrolment, and the cost of the check will be their responsibility.

    Child Protection
    Under the Child Protection (Working with Children) Act 2012, and the Child Protection (Working with Children) Regulation 2013, students enrolled in UOW degrees where their studies require them to engage in activities that involve children or young people, may be required to complete a Volunteer/Student Declaration and/or undergo a Working With Children Check (WWCC).

     

  • Credit for Prior Learning

    Credit for prior learning is not available for this course. Students seeking recognition for prior learning should consider applying for the Bachelor of Nursing.
