Overview

Want to understand why economies grow, how financial markets respond to change, and how major decisions are made by businesses and governments?

The Bachelor of Economics and Finance is a specialist degree that combines economics and finance in a single, purpose-built program. Unlike many pathways that offer economics and finance as majors within broader business degrees or through double degrees, this course integrates both disciplines from day one, helping you understand the relationship between economic conditions, financial markets and organisational decision-making.

Learn how to answer the questions that shape organisations and economies. Should we invest? Where should resources be allocated? How will policy changes affect businesses and communities? What do the data tell us? You'll develop the analytical, financial and economic skills needed to tackle these challenges and support better decision-making.

You'll learn how to analyse data, assess risk, evaluate policy, interpret market trends, and make evidence-based recommendations. Economics develops a way of thinking that can be applied well beyond traditional 'economist' roles, while finance adds specialist expertise in financial decision-making. Together, these capabilities open pathways across finance, government, consulting, sustainability, research, international development, and industry.

Graduates pursue careers across international development, investment, public policy, consulting, research, sustainability, and banking.

See the course handbook for more information.

Economics and finance touch almost every major issue affecting society, from housing affordability and healthcare funding to sustainable investment, emerging technologies and global economic development. Throughout the degree, you'll explore how economic and financial decisions shape industries, organisations and communities.

As you progress, you'll move from foundational concepts to practical application. Analyse real-world datasets, investigate contemporary economic challenges, and develop solutions to financial and policy problems using the same analytical approaches employed by industry and government.

Throughout the degree you will learn to build investment portfolios using trading software, explore how sustainability influences capital allocation, and examine the technologies transforming financial services. By examining issues such as sustainability, technological change and global economic challenges, you'll develop a deeper understanding of the forces shaping the future of economies and organisations.

Whether you're interested in financial markets, business strategy, public policy, sustainability or economic development, you'll graduate with the ability to interpret complex information, evaluate evidence and make informed recommendations that help organisations, industries and communities respond to change.

The Bachelor of Economics and Finance can form the first three years of a UOW Integrated Master's (IM), allowing you to complete your bachelor's and master's degree in four years.

The School of Business is a signatory to the Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME), a global initiative of the United Nations, equipping you to make ethical business decisions throughout your career.
