Overview

The Bachelor of Economics and Finance - Bachelor of Laws allows you to graduate with qualifications in both Economics and Finance, and Law. You'll begin your studies in UOW's dedicated first-year law immersion program, studying only law subjects in your first year before introducing Economics and Finance in your second year.

During this first year, you'll learn in small, interactive seminars that encourage collaboration, discussion and practical application. This Law immersion program supports your transition to university through dedicated pod groups, where you study alongside the same cohort across first-semester subjects, with academic support from a dedicated First Year Coordinator. As part of your law degree, you'll complete a legal internship, gaining valuable workplace experience before graduation. This requirement is unique to UOW, which is the only law school in New South Wales to require a legal internship as part of a Bachelor of Laws degree.

The Bachelor of Economics and Finance is a specialist degree that combines economics and finance in a single, purpose-built program, helping you understand the relationship between economic conditions, financial markets and organisational decision-making. Economics and finance touch almost every major issue affecting society, from housing affordability and healthcare funding to sustainable investment, emerging technologies and global economic development. Throughout the degree, you'll explore how economic and financial decisions shape industries, organisations and communities.

In the Bachelor of Laws, you'll develop skills in legal research, writing, advocacy, analysis and reasoning. In the Bachelor of Economics and Finance, you'll learn how to analyse data, assess risk, evaluate policy, interpret market trends and make evidence-based recommendations. Together, these capabilities prepare you for careers across legal practice, government, policy, consulting and finance.

This double degree allows you to graduate with two qualifications in less time and overall cost compared with studying each course separately.

See the course handbook for more information.

Throughout the Bachelor of Economics and Finance, you'll learn to build investment portfolios using trading software, explore how sustainability influences capital allocation, and examine the technologies transforming financial services. By examining issues such as sustainability, technological change and global economic challenges, you'll develop a deeper understanding of the forces shaping the future of economies and organisations. Whether you're interested in financial markets, business strategy, public policy, sustainability or economic development, you'll graduate with the ability to interpret complex information, evaluate evidence and make informed recommendations that help organisations, industries and communities respond to change.

In your Law degree you'll take part in practical activities such as mock court proceedings, legal negotiations, oral submissions, and advocacy exercises that mirror professional legal practice. These experiences help build confidence in applying legal knowledge to real-world situations. The Law curriculum continues to evolve in response to changes in the legal profession, including artificial intelligence. You can further explore contemporary issues through electives, including emerging technologies and artificial intelligence, examining how they are creating new legal and ethical challenges.
