Overview

The Bachelor of Communication and Media - Bachelor of Laws allows you to graduate with qualifications in both Communication and Media, and Law. You will begin your studies in UOW's dedicated first-year law immersion program, studying only law subjects in your first year before introducing Communication and Media in the second year.

During this first year, you will learn in small, interactive seminars that encourage collaboration, discussion and practical application. This Law immersion program supports your transition to university through dedicated pod groups, where you study alongside the same cohort across first-semester subjects, with academic support from a dedicated First Year Coordinator. As part of your law degree, you will complete a legal internship, gaining valuable workplace experience before graduation. This requirement is unique to UOW, which is the only law school in New South Wales to require a legal internship as part of a Bachelor of Laws degree.

In the Bachelor of Communication and Media, you will explore how communication shapes organisations, communities and society. You will develop skills in communication strategy, content creation, media production, storytelling and audience engagement while learning how to communicate effectively across a range of traditional and digital media platforms. You'll have access to professional facilities, including a television studio, radio and podcasting studios, a VR studio, newsroom and visual design spaces.

Throughout both degrees, you will develop strong skills in communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, analysis and reasoning. You will learn to evaluate evidence, consider multiple perspectives, and construct clear, persuasive arguments, preparing you for careers across legal practice, media, communications, government, consulting and corporate environments.

This double degree allows you to graduate with two qualifications in less time and overall cost compared with studying each course separately.

See the course handbook for more information.

Learning is practical and project-based throughout the Bachelor of Media and Communcations, with you working on briefs that reflect real social, cultural and industry contexts. You complete a professional portfolio that demonstrates how you communicate effectively across multiple formats and platforms, providing strong evidence of your skills for prospective employers.

Throughout the degree, you will learn to think critically about media, technology and communication practices, and to apply ethical judgement when creating content.

In your Law degree you will take part in practical activities such as mock court proceedings, legal negotiations, oral submissions, and advocacy exercises that mirror professional legal practice. These experiences help build confidence in applying legal knowledge to real-world situations. The Law curriculum continues to evolve in response to changes in the legal profession, including artificial intelligence. You can further explore contemporary issues through electives, including emerging technologies and artificial intelligence, examining how they are creating new legal and ethical challenges.

    Full-Time Study Load

As a full-time student, you can expect to commit around 48 hours of study per week. This includes class time and independent study. You may need to factor more time for examination study and practical work & placements.
