If you’re planning to study at UOW immediately after finishing your HSC, International Baccalaureate (IB), or an interstate equivalent, you can apply for Early Admission to this course. Applications can be submitted via the UOW Early Admission website during the designated period, usually June – August each year.

Students can also apply through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC).

If you’re a non-school leaver (e.g., completed Year 12 previously and/or have a TAFE qualification or equivalent), you can apply directly to UOW.

People are a vital part of practicing law. Having a deep understanding of human behaviour offers invaluable depth to your role as a lawyer. Likewise, understanding how the law operates can benefit clients for practicing psychologists.

Throughout the Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) you will undertake the scientific study of the human mind and its functions, especially those affecting behaviour. This degree provides comprehensive, foundational knowledge in the processes basic to human psychological functioning. The Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) is the first stage of qualification required to work as a professional psychologist.

The Bachelor of Laws equips you with a comprehensive legal education. This world-class degree provides you with a thorough grounding in the law, the social and ethical context in which law operates, while equipping you with essential practical skills including an internship and integrated skills program.

Careers

Psychology and Law are intrinsically related, with one studying human behaviour and the other attempting to regulate it. Psychological research also has significant impact on the law, investigating areas such as witness misidentification, interrogation techniques of law enforcement, and false confessions. Interpersonal skills in identifying client goals, negotiation and mediation, and an empathetic understanding with a client are cornerstones of both psychology and law, making this degree an advantageous combination.

Accreditation & professional recognition

The Bachelor of Laws is accredited by the Legal Profession Admission Board. By completing your law degree at UOW, you are completing an academic qualification that is recognised for admission as a lawyer in Australia, subject to completing state-approved Practical Legal Training (PLT). Completion of four years in Psychology is an important first step for registration as a psychologist in Australia. The Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) is accredited as the first three years of study. To complete the four years, students must complete an Honours year to meet the academic requirements for eligibility for provisional registration as a psychologist.

An additional two years of education and training is necessary to apply for general registration. This can be through a fifth year at University plus one year of supervised practice in the community or an approved postgraduate degree accredited at the fifth and sixth year level. Compulsory Work Based Placement
Undertaking a work-integrated learning experience during your university education is now a significant contributor to being competitive in securing employment in your field of choice when you graduate from UOW.
Law students will complete a Legal Internship subject (LLB3397). This subject is the vehicle for a practical placement, completed over 4 weeks (totaling 140 hours, at 35 hours per week). It is designed to expose students to the application of the law in practice; enable students to understand the importance of developing the skills of legal research, communication, drafting, practice management, and problem solving; and enable students to observe and reflect upon the values, ethical standards, and conduct of the legal profession in practice.



  • Workload

    Full-Time Study Load

    As a full-time student, you can expect to commit around 48 hours of study per week. This includes class time and independent study. You may need to factor more time for examination study and practical work & placements.
