Council Member
Elected by Academic staff.
Term expires 31 December 2027.
Alfredo Paloyo is Professor of Economics and Discipline Leader at the University of Wollongong, bringing together sharp empirical analysis with practical, on-the-ground leadership. His reputation is forged in applied microeconomic research that delivers clear, evidence-based insights into pressing national issues: human capital, inequality, and social policy. Drawing on international training and collaboration, Alfredo brings a global perspective on how universities produce knowledge, nurture talent, and navigate rapidly shifting economic and community needs.
In his role as Discipline Leader, Alfredo is both an academic and an operational manager. He oversees the academic governance for Economics, which means managing the curriculum, setting research strategy, coordinating staff development, and handling resource planning. This hands-on experience has given him a practical, clear-eyed view of the institutional and financial pressures facing Australian universities today. He understands the critical – and often difficult and complex – balancing act between maintaining academic integrity, ensuring student success, and achieving long-term financial viability. Having been across accreditation processes, major curricular transformations, and liaising with stakeholders – both internal and external – Alfredo understands precisely how decisions made at the executive and Council levels ripple out to shape outcomes across the entire institution.
Alfredo offers the University Council a commitment to evidence-based decision-making, backed by his expertise and operational experience. He is equipped to critically engage with major strategic questions concerning investment choices, risk management, academic quality, and overall institutional direction. Above all, he approaches governance with a deep sense of responsibility to students, staff, and the wider Australian community, motivated by an unwavering belief in the essential public value that universities provide.
