If you’re planning to study at UOW immediately after finishing your HSC, International Baccalaureate (IB), or an interstate equivalent, you can apply for Early Admission to this course. Applications can be submitted via the UOW Early Admission website during the designated period, usually June – August each year.

Students can also apply through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC).

If you’re a non-school leaver (e.g., completed Year 12 previously and/or have a TAFE qualification or equivalent), you can apply directly to UOW.

Before applying, please review the requirements, intakes, and deadlines for your chosen degree.

International students are encouraged to apply with the support of an approved UOW agent. An agent can help navigate the application process and ensure that you submit all necessary documentation. For your nearest agent, please see our agent list.

Alternatively, if you would like to apply directly (without an agent), you can start the process through our Apply Online portal. Please note, some applicants will not be eligible to apply directly and will be prompted to apply via an agent.

International students who are studying an Australian Year 12 qualification in or outside of Australia may choose to apply through UOW Early Admission, and/or through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC).

Overview

Medical biotechnology is the application of advances in molecular and cell biology to medicine, human health and disease.

The Bachelor of Medical Biotechnology (Honours) encompasses the rapidly evolving fields of gene editing and CRISPR technologies, stem cell therapy, microbiome research, data science and Immunotherapy. By using innovative technologies, such as molecular modelling and design, next generation sequencing and advanced drug-delivery systems, biotechnology is shaping diverse aspects of medicine (e.g. cancer, vaccines, disease therapy and diagnostics, and medical devices), and many other fields (e.g. veterinary science, food production). This course will provide you with the tools and knowledge to work in any of these fields.

You will study the following areas: molecular and functional biology, chemistry, biochemistry, anatomy and physiology, genetics, statistics, cell biology, immunology, microbiology and bioinformatics, just to name a few. You will learn about techniques in biotechnology and medical research whilst also having opportunities to explore other areas of passion through dedicated elective space within this degree.

To support your learning, you will participate in practical classes in our purpose-built sciences teaching facility in the Science Precinct of the Wollongong campus, or out in the field.

See the course handbook for more information.

Built into the fourth year of the course, honours includes a focused research project in an area of interest in medical biotechnology, under the supervision of a leading researcher, together with other advanced course work, ensuring that you have the skills and knowledge to meet the needs of tomorrow's employers.
