Overview

The Bachelor of Computer Science - Bachelor of Laws allows you to graduate with qualifications in both Computer Science and Law. You will begin your studies in UOW's dedicated first-year law immersion program, studying only law subjects in your first year before introducing Computer Science in your second year.

During this first year, you will learn in small, interactive seminars that encourage collaboration, discussion and practical application. This Law immersion program supports your transition to university through dedicated pod groups, where you study alongside the same cohort across first-semester subjects, with academic support from a dedicated First Year Coordinator. As part of your law degree, you will complete a legal internship, gaining valuable workplace experience before graduation. This requirement is unique to UOW, which is the only law school in New South Wales to require a legal internship as part of a Bachelor of Laws degree.

The Bachelor of Computer Science gives you the knowledge and skills to become part of this rapidly evolving field. You'll learn how computers, software and digital systems work, then apply that knowledge to solve practical problems, design innovative solutions and develop technology for a wide range of applications. You'll build foundations in programming, problem-solving, networks, databases, web technologies and software development, while learning to work effectively in teams and communicate with project stakeholders. If you choose not to undertake a major, you can follow a broader study pathway that develops advanced computer science knowledge and professional skills.

In the Bachelor of Laws, you will develop skills in legal research, writing, advocacy, analysis and reasoning. In the Bachelor of Computer Science, you will build skills in software development, computational problem-solving, communication and project delivery. Together, these capabilities prepare you for careers across legal practice, government, policy and a wide range of technology-focused roles.

This double degree allows you to graduate with two qualifications in less time and overall cost compared with studying each course separately.

See the course handbook for more information.

In the Bachelor of Computer Science you'll develop a strong understanding of how computers, software and digital systems work while learning how to apply computing theory to practical challenges. Your studies span programming, web technologies, data management, networks and communications, systems analysis, human-computer interaction and project management, giving you the foundation to design and develop technology solutions across a range of applications.

As your skills grow, you'll learn how to design algorithms, develop software, evaluate computer-based systems and apply industry-relevant tools and practices. Throughout the degree, you'll work on collaborative projects that strengthen your ability to communicate with stakeholders, contribute to teams and deliver technology solutions from planning through to implementation.

In your Law degree you will take part in practical activities such as mock court proceedings, legal negotiations, oral submissions, and advocacy exercises that mirror professional legal practice. These experiences help build confidence in applying legal knowledge to real-world situations. The Law curriculum continues to evolve in response to changes in the legal profession, including artificial intelligence. You can further explore contemporary issues through electives, including emerging technologies and artificial intelligence, examining how they are creating new legal and ethical challenges.
