If you’re planning to study at UOW immediately after finishing your HSC, International Baccalaureate (IB), or an interstate equivalent, you can apply for Early Admission to this course. Applications can be submitted via the UOW Early Admission website during the designated period, usually June – August each year.

Students can also apply through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC).

If you’re a non-school leaver (e.g., completed Year 12 previously and/or have a TAFE qualification or equivalent), you can apply directly to UOW.

Overview

Communication and media shape how ideas, stories and information are created, shared and understood. International Studies examines the global systems, cultures and forces that influence the world around us.

The Bachelor of Communication and Media develops your creative and critical thinking around communication, how it works and why it matters. You build practical skills across media, digital platforms and emerging technologies through hands-on learning in writing, visual communication, media production and digital storytelling.

The Bachelor of International Studies explores how political, social, cultural and economic forces intersect at local, national and international levels. You examine nations, power and global connections while developing skills in analysis, problem-solving, cross-cultural understanding and communication.

This double degree allows you to complete two qualifications in less time and at a lower overall cost than studying each course separately. You graduate with the distinct knowledge and capabilities developed through each qualification.

The Bachelor of Communication and Media gives you the flexibility to discover where your interests sit within communication and media before refining your focus through majors in digital and social media, journalism, marketing communication and advertising, screen media production, or visual communication design. Learning is practical and project-based, with opportunities to build a professional portfolio across different formats and platforms.

Studying Communication and Media at UOW also gives you access to professional facilities including television, radio and podcasting studios, a VR studio, newsroom environments and visual design spaces. 

In the Bachelor of International Studies, you develop an understanding of how global systems operate and evolve through the study of states, international organisations, non-governmental organisations and other actors. Through simulations, negotiation exercises and applied learning, you build communication, problem-solving and intercultural skills for complex global environments.

You also complete a compulsory minor that strengthens intercultural communication through language study or an International Relations extension pathway, with opportunities to study abroad. By graduation, you will be able to apply practical communication skills alongside an understanding of international systems, global challenges and cross-cultural contexts.

  • Academic Entry Requirements

    Applicants must achieve the required score in a previous qualification, equivalent to completing at least 13 years of schooling in Australia.

    To succeed in your chosen course, you should have completed relevant subjects in senior high school or other qualifications. For more information, refer to UOW's Entry Requirements page.

  • Workload

    Full-Time Study Load

    As a full-time student, you can expect to commit around 48 hours of study per week. This includes class time and independent study. You may need to factor more time for examination study and practical work & placements.

    If you have completed prior studies or relevant professional experience, you can request course credit or subject exemptions to reduce the duration and cost of your program.

    Credit for prior learning evaluates your previous study or work experience related to your chosen subjects.
