Are you curious about what Asia has to offer? Aside from its economic potential, it remains one of the most exciting regions in the world. The Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarship will immerse you in everything within this region – ultimately forging long lasting and meaningful relationships between the next generation of young Australian and Asian leaders.

The Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarship is an exciting initiative of the Westpac Bicentennial Foundation, which aims to help future generations of Australian leaders forge stronger ties with Asia. 

Valued at $12,250 each for study at one of Asia’s leading universities, the scholarship is designed to support your development as an Asia-capable leader whilst giving you the flexibility to create an authentic cultural experience. The scholarship starts with a one-week residential program to help prepare you and build connections to make the most of your exchange (travel permitting). You’ll also get opportunities to engage with Australia-Asia leaders to expand your thinking and global networks.

If you’re an undergraduate who is passionate about developing Australia-Asia ties, apply for a 2022 Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarship.

Students need to apply to the Westpac Bicentennial Foundation for the Scholarship and must also apply for and be accepted into the UOW Exchange Program.

The Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarship, valued at $12,250 each, offers Australian students an international experience to help develop their cross-cultural thinking and leadership skills, as well as access to networking opportunities with Australia-Asia thought leaders.

  • $12,250 (AUD) to cover travel costs, accommodation, cultural immersion activities and other overseas expenses for up to two semesters.
  • Participation in an immersive Leadership Development Program to further to develop you as an Asia-capable leader.
  • A one-week residential experience in Asia to enhance cultural-competency, establish support networks and connect with Australia-Asia thought leaders.
  • Build your own adventure with the freedom and flexibility to individualise your exchange and enhance your experience.
  • Become a lifelong member of the Westpac 100 Scholars Network, growing by 100 scholars each year, forever.
  • Attend the Westpac Scholars' Summit, an annual event that brings together Westpac Scholars from across all five scholarship programs (travel restrictions dependent).

To be eligible for this scholarship, you need to:

  • be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • be enrolled as a full time student in second year or beyond when commencing exchange
  • hold a minimum of a credit average
  • meet UOW exchange requirements and applicant criteria
  • intend to study a one or two semester exchange
  • not hold or intend to hold another merit-based scholarship for the purpose of tertiary study in Asia
  • be eligible for or have received approval to undertake a semester long exchange program at one of the below locations.

Scholarships are open to students who have the passion, ideas and drive to be an advocate for Australia's relationship with Asia.

Westpac Asian Exchange Scholars will demonstrate the following:

  • a clear understanding of Asia’s role in Australia’s future prosperity.
  • a desire to learn about a specific Asian culture, language, tradition or business through a combination of academic study and cultural immersion.
  • the potential and ambition to contribute to strengthening Australia-Asia in their future endeavours.
  • a genuine desire to be an active member of the Westpac 100 Scholars Network.

To retain this scholarship:

  • attend the Westpac Scholars Summit in Sydney in April 2022.
  • participate in an approved exchange program in Semester 2, 2022.

  1. Apply for the Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarship: applications will be open Monday 13 September to Monday 29 November (5pm AEST) 2021. Scholarship guidelines and other useful information can be found at the Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarship site.

  2. Apply for an UOW Exchange program: applications close 3rd December 2021


  • applicants will be notified of the outcome of their scholarship application in February/March 2022. 
  • once applications close for the Westpac Bicentennial Foundation, they will contact the candidates to complete a video interview. The Westpac Bicentennial Foundation will convene selection panels to determine successful candidates.
