Overview

Advance your nursing practice through research that matters to healthcare. The Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) is a research-focused degree for high-achieving nursing graduates who want to investigate a clinical issue in depth. You'll develop advanced research capability and contribute evidence that can improve patient care, professional practice, and healthcare delivery.

This degree is ideal if you're a curious and motivated nurse driven by a challenge, issue, or aspect of practice you want to better understand.

Rather than following a prescribed sequence of subjects, you'll complete an independent research project under academic supervision. You'll learn how to review evidence, design research, analyse findings, and communicate recommendations that support healthcare improvement.

You can strengthen your contribution to evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and leadership. It also provides a pathway to higher research degrees such as a Master of Philosophy or PhD.

Available full-time or part-time, the degree offers flexibility for students balancing study with professional commitments.

See the course handbook for more information.

Your honours degree centres on a substantial independent research project. Students get the opportunity to investigate an issue they have encountered through nursing practice or a topic they are passionate about exploring further.

Projects may examine patient experiences, clinical practices, workforce challenges, education and training, or opportunities to improve healthcare services. The focus is on generating evidence that can inform professional practice.

Working closely with experienced supervisors, you'll progress through the complete research process. You'll develop a proposal, review literature, collect and analyse data, and present your findings in a thesis. Depending on your project, you may undertake an audit, interviews, focus groups, surveys, or literature-based research.

A key strength of the degree is UOW's close relationship with the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District. This relationship supports clinically relevant research and exposes you to both academic and industry perspectives. Selected projects are supervised by both academic researchers and practising clinicians, giving you access to current clinical expertise and research guidance.

You'll also gain practical experience with research governance and ethics processes. This may include preparing ethics applications, participant information sheets, and consent documentation. These skills are valuable for nurses involved in quality improvement and service evaluation activities.

Beyond your project, you'll be encouraged to engage with UOW's active research culture through journal clubs and research seminars. These experiences help you build research literacy, strengthen critical thinking, and deepen your understanding of contemporary healthcare issues.

Whether you're considering further study or looking to strengthen your contribution in clinical practice, you'll graduate with the skills to evaluate evidence, investigate complex healthcare problems, and support improvements in patient care and service delivery.
