If you’re planning to study at UOW immediately after finishing your HSC, International Baccalaureate (IB), or an interstate equivalent, you can apply for Early Admission to this course. Applications can be submitted via the UOW Early Admission website during the designated period, usually June – August each year.

Students can also apply through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC).

If you’re a non-school leaver (e.g., completed Year 12 previously and/or have a TAFE qualification or equivalent), you can apply directly to UOW.

Overview

The Bachelor of Laws (Honours) (Direct Entry) is available if you transfer from the Bachelor of Laws (Direct Entry) after achieving strong academic results. Direct entry into this course is not available. If you meet the academic requirements, you can complete an accredited legal education while undertaking an integrated honours research experience, allowing you to graduate with honours within the same four-year timeframe as the Bachelor of Laws (Direct Entry) degree.

Alongside developing practical skills in legal research, drafting, advocacy and negotiation throughout the law degree, in the Honours component you will complete a substantial independent research project in an area of law that interests you. Working closely with an academic supervisor, you will , design a research proposal, investigate a legal issue in depth and develop advanced legal writing skills.

Throughout the degree, you will engage with UOW's commitment to social justice, practical legal skills and learning with a real-world focus. You will study the prescribed areas of legal knowledge required for future admission to the legal profession while developing the analytical, research and critical thinking skills valued across legal practice, policy, government and academia.

Honours is completed during your final year and does not require an additional year of study. If you meet the academic requirements, you can transfer into the Bachelor of Laws (Honours) after demonstrating strong academic performance in the Bachelor of Laws (Direct Entry).

The honours component replaces two law electives with a year-long research experience under the guidance of an academic supervisor. In the first half of the year, you will develop advanced legal research skills, explore research methodologies and prepare a research proposal focused on a legal topic of your choice. In the second half, you will complete an independent research project.

This experience allows you to investigate complex legal issues in depth while strengthening your research, analytical and critical thinking capabilities. Some students have gone on to co-author academic journal articles with their supervisor based on their honours research.

You will graduate with a comprehensive legal education, workplace-ready skills and advanced research capabilities that can support careers in legal practice, policy development, law reform and research, as well as future postgraduate study.

Accreditation & professional recognition

The Bachelor of Laws is accredited by the NSW Legal Profession Admission Board. By completing your law degree at UOW, you are completing an academic qualification that is recognised for admission as a lawyer in Australia, subject to completing state-approved Practical Legal Training (PLT). Direct entry into this degree is not available. To be eligible to apply for a transfer into the Bachelor of Laws (Honours) (course code 1883), students enrolled in the Bachelor of Laws, four-year Direct Entry degree (course code 1881), must have completed at least 124 credit points of compulsory Law subjects, including 48 credit points of 100-level LLB subjects and 42 credit points of 200-level LLB subjects. They must also have achieved a weighted average mark (WAM) of 70% or more based on all 100- and 200-level core LLB subjects.

Compulsory Work Based Placement

Undertaking a work-integrated learning experience during your university education is now a significant contributor to being competitive in securing employment in your field of choice when you graduate from UOW.
Law students will complete a Legal Internship subject (LLB3397). This subject is the vehicle for a practical placement, completed over 4 weeks (totaling 140 hours, at 35 hours per week). It is designed to expose students to the application of the law in practice; enable students to understand the importance of developing the skills of legal research, communication, drafting, practice management, and problem solving; and enable students to observe and reflect upon the values, ethical standards, and conduct of the legal profession in practice.



  • Workload

    Full-Time Study Load

    As a full-time student, you can expect to commit around 48 hours of study per week. This includes class time and independent study. You may need to factor more time for examination study and practical work & placements.
