Applying to UOW

Congratulations on taking the first step towards your journey to UOW.

We’re here to guide and support you through every stage of your application, helping you make informed choices about your future. At UOW, you’ll join a diverse community of students all working towards a shared goal, becoming graduates who are recognised by employers around the world for their skills, knowledge and global outlook.

On this page, you’ll find everything you need to know about applying to UOW, including application requirements, key steps in the process, and helpful tips to get started.

Application closing dates

Bachelor and Postgraduate Coursework Degrees

For coursework degrees, we recommend applying no later than 4 months before your preferred intake of commencement. This will allow sufficient time for your application to be assessed and, if you are successful in receiving an offer, for you to accept your offer and obtain a student visa.

Some courses have set application closing dates. Refer to the Course Finder page for your preferred course for key dates, entry requirements, and more information.

Higher Degree Research Courses

Applications for Higher Degree Research scholarships close on 3 October the year prior to your preferred intake of commencement. Applications submitted after the 3 October will not be eligible or assessed for a research scholarship. You may apply for a scholarship in the following year after commencing your course.

How to Apply

International students can apply to study at the University of Wollongong (UOW) in a number of ways.  The application options available to you will depend on where you are currently living and your individual circumstances.

We encourage international students to speak with a UOW representative for guidance on course options, eligibility and the application process. An authorised education agent can:

  • help you choose a suitable course
  • support you through the application process
  • ensure all required documents are submitted
  • provide advice on student visa requirements

To find an authorised agent near you, see our agent list

In some cases, you may be eligible to apply directly to UOW without using a representative. If you choose to apply directly, you can submit an online application through UOW Apply.

Explore your direct application options via UOW Apply.

Onshore International students who are completing their High School Certificate (HSC) in Australia may be eligible to apply via UOW Early Admissions.

UOW Early Admission is our early offer program for students finishing Year 12 (HSC or other Australian equivalents). Instead of relying solely on your final year 12 results, we consider your Year 11 performance, skills, and experiences, giving you the chance to secure a place at UOW before your final exams even begin. Find out more on via our Early Admissions webpage or contact our Future Students team.

Applicants for the following research degrees can apply directly to UOW:

  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
  • Professional Doctorate
  • Master of Philosophy
  • Master or Research
  • Bachelor of Research

Before you apply, please check the entry requirements, intake dates, and application deadlines for your chosen degree on the Postgraduate Research Course Finder.

International students should also review UOW’s English language requirements and ensure they understand the English language requirements for their student visa, where applicable.

International students under 18 may be eligible to enrol at UOW if they live in Australia with a parent, legal guardian or an approved relative. If you will not be living with an approved guardian in Australia, you must be at least 18 years old when your course commences.

If you will be under the age of 18 at the time you commence your UOW course, you must submit the Under 18 International Student Guardianship Form with your application. This form must include details of an approved guardian, in line with the Department of Home Affairs welfare requirements for students under 18.

If you will not have a parent, legal guardian or approved relative living with you in Australia, you may instead apply for a course offered by UOW College Australia, which can accept students under the age of 18 in the following circumstances:

  • you are accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, or a relative aged  21 or over who has been approved by your parent or guardian, and this arrangement is approved by the Department of Home Affairs; or
  • you apply for an approved homestay arrangement for students under 18.

Entry Requirements

Each UOW course has entry criteria that you must meet before you can enrol. These include academic requirements and English language proficiency.

Entry requirements for each UOW course are available on the course information page in Course Finder. Use the ‘students’ filter on the top right of the page and select ‘International’ to view the relevant entry requirements, fees, intakes and course information.

You must meet the English language requirements for your chosen course. UOW recognises a range of English language proficiency tests, including IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge, and OET. Previous study in English may also be accepted.

Learn more about English language requirements and available English language courses on our English Language Requirements page

Studies that you have already completed may count as credit towards your UOW degree. This could reduce the length and cost of your course.

UOW has arrangements with many overseas institutions that may allow you to reduce the time it will take to complete your degree. Not all UOW courses are eligible.

For information about our credit arrangements, visit Credit for Prior Learning.

Documentation Requirements

You need to provide copies of all academic records, marksheets or transcripts of studies previously undertaken. Please see further information about supporting documents.

Some courses have additional entry requirements, which are outlined on the individual course pages in Course Finder.

Clear scanned copies of original academic records, marksheets or transcripts of studies previously undertaken must be provided with your application. Official English translations are also required for documents in another language. The academic records must show:

  • all subjects undertaken up to the point of submitting applications
  • grades obtained (including fails)
  • stages reached or qualifications gained.

Evidence of graduate status should indicate that the academic requirements of the course have been completed or that the award has been conferred.
The University reserves the right to request original documents or certified copies and may seek verification from the institution to confirm document authenticity.

Where documents are not issued in English, an English translation must be provided. Translations must be completed by a professional translation service or by the issuing institution.

Where an applicant has had digital academic document(s) issued via My eQuals, they can submit links to these documents to UOW as part of their admissions application.
To submit My eQuals digital academic documents, please follow the below instructions:

  • Generate a link to your My eQuals digital academic document(s) – do not nominate an expiry date
  • Paste the link into a Word document
  • If you added a PIN to the link, please ensure you note the PIN next to the link
  • Where you have more than one relevant My eQuals digital document to submit, provide a link for each, ensuring you label each link clearly

Learn more about My eQuals.

If you have completed an English language test to meet the English language requirements for your course, please upload a copy of your results with your application.

Application Process

What happens after you apply?

How long your application takes to be processed depends on the course you applied for:

  • Undergraduate and postgraduate coursework applications usually take two to four weeks to be assessed.
  • Research applications usually take around six weeks to be be assessed.

If your application to UOW is successful, you will receive an email with your Offer of Admission letter. This letter confirms that you have been offered a place at UOW and, where applicable, a preparatory English or academic program at UOW College Australia.

If you applied through a UOW international representative, your Offer of Admission letter will be emailed to both you and your representative.

Your Offer of Admission letter includes important information about:

  • your program of study
  • any conditions attached to your offer
  • the  steps you need to take to accept your offer

To make the acceptance process as smooth as possible, please read the Understanding and accepting your offer page

If you do not meet the entry requirements for your preferred course, you may be considered for an alternate or packaged offer, where a suitable pathway is available.

For example, if you do not meet the entry requirements for direct entry into a Master’s degree, you may be offered a packaged pathway that includes a Graduate Certificate with progression into the Master’s degree, with credit applied where appropriate.

Alternate offers are assessed on a case-by-case basis, subject to pathway availability, eligibility, and suitable alternative course options.

Some offers are conditional, which means you must meet certain requirements before you can accept your offer. These may include:

  • completing your current studies
  • meeting the English language requirements for your course
  • providing original documents or certified copies of your academic records

Any conditions that apply will be clearly listed in your Offer of Admission letter.

If you have any questions about the conditions on your offer, please refer to the Understanding and accepting your offer page or contact our Future Students team.

If your application is unsuccessful, you will receive notification by email within the timeframes outlined above.

UOW is committed to protecting your privacy and the security of your personal information. Details about how your information is collected, used and stored are outlined in our Privacy Statement, including specific information about privacy and consent for sponsored students.
