UOW’s reputation for quality research and teaching reaches worldwide. UOW researchers consistently perform well in Australian Research Council funding rounds, making UOW one of the greatest beneficiaries of ARC funds relative to our size. Our teaching staff are regularly lauded in national awards programs including Office for Learning and Teaching citations and fellowships.

Research and teaching staff are encouraged to develop and participate in interdisciplinary partnerships, and professional services staff are supported to take advantage of secondment opportunities across the UOW network.

Looking after our own

UOW Well@Work educates and engages staff on topics such as nutrition, mental health, physical activity and general health to raise awareness and further improve the health of UOW staff. Ongoing events and activities cover a wide variety of health & wellbeing issues with a focus on:

  • Healthy Mind targeting mental health training, employee counselling resources, and immediate support and help line information.
  • Healthy @ Work looks at workstation set ups, and information on how to implement change to posture, appropriate office stretching, and ergonomic advice.
  • Healthy Body advises staff on physical activity, general health information and nutrition.

We perform very well in our sector against Workplace Health and Safety benchmarks, with an excellent safety record.

Our staff have opportunitues beyond the classroom, office or lab. Some examples of how some UOW staff extend themselves are;

VOLUNTEERING

You can directly help the University through programs like the UOW School of Medicine’s patient volunteer program, or connect with organisations with close associations to UOW, such as SCARF (Strategic Community Assistance for Refugee Families) and AIME (the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience).

INDIGENOUS TRAILS

The Faculty of Science Medicine and Health has pioneered the TRAILS project: a program of presentations, walking tours and traditional cuisine to create awareness and respect from Indigenous and non-Indigenous students and staff for the Aboriginal history and culture of the region.

UOW Cares helps staff at UOW make a real difference through regular donations to charitable organisations. By giving through their pay, UOW staff can provide a reliable funding stream for community and humanitarian organisations focused on helping communities and individuals reach their full potential. UOW Cares beneficiaries have included:

  • SCARF, providing support to refugee families moving to the region
  • Headspace Wollongong, providing mental health services to the community
