Overview

The medical radiation physics major is for graduates with preliminary education background in physics who wish to work in public health and related areas, and who have a need for current knowledge and technical expertise in radiation oncology and diagnostic imaging medical physics.

Your lectures in nuclear medicine, radiobiology and radiation protection and practical classes will be held in hospitals by practising medical physicists and university academics.

Our medical radiation physics (MRP) program is backed by clinical associations with numerous hospitals. UOW’s medical radiation physics education and training program is the largest in the southern hemisphere.  Our strong ties with industries and government labs ensure you receive significant industry exposure throughout your degree.

The Master of Science (Medical Radiation Physics) is accredited by the Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine (ACPSEM), and the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs, Inc. (CAMPEP) - the first accredited program outside of North America.

Accreditation & professional recognition

The Master of Science (Medical Radiation Physics) degree is accredited by the Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine (ACPSEM), and the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs, Inc. (CAMPEP) and the degree conforms to the requirements for membership of the Australian Institute of Physics.

A recognised bachelor’s degree in Physics with an equivalent average mark of 65%, or a bachelor’s degree in any field with at least first-year university-level physics and mathematics, with an equivalent average mark of 75%.

  • Workload

    Full-Time Study Load

    As a full-time student, you can expect to commit around 48 hours of study per week. This includes class time and independent study. You may need to factor more time for examination study and practical work & placements.

  • Credit for Prior Learning

    The maximum amount of external credit that can be awarded at the postgraduate level is 50% of the credit point value of the UOW course.

    If you have completed prior studies or relevant professional experience, you can request course credit or subject exemptions to reduce the duration and cost of your program.
