Overview

The Master of Computer Science provides you with skills and abilities to solve complex real-world problems by teaching you how to develop and deploy computer applications, while integrating computer science methods with effective management strategies.

Throughout your degree you will study subjects in IT project management, advanced programming, algorithms and data structures. You will also have the opportunity to specialise in one of the following majors offered at the Wollongong campus:

  • Cyber security (offered at both Wollongong and Liverpool campuses)
  • Machine learning and big data
  • Network and information security
  • Software engineering

If you do not wish to select a specialisation, you will complete advanced subjects providing you with specific knowledge, as well as professional skills in computer science.

During this degree you will put theory into practice with an individual capstone project.

The Master of Computer Science will equip you with independent learning strategies to keep abreast of innovations in technology and computer science, industry trends and standards.

Fee subsidised places available

UOW is offering Commonwealth supported places (CSPs) for all of our postgraduate coursework degrees in 2025. This means the Australian government will subsidise your tuition fees by up to 75%. To be eligible for this fee subsidy, you must meet the following criteria: Be a domestic student, i.e. an Australian or New Zealand citizen, a permanent resident of Australia or a permanent Australian Humanitarian visa holder.

Network and Information Security (specialisation)

All industries today require computer scientists with deep skill sets and an ability to remain on the cutting edge of emerging technologies in network and information security. You will study subjects including advanced network security, mathematics for cryptography, and modern cryptography. You will be able to put theory into practice with an individual capstone project.

Throughout the major you will learn how to solve complex real-world problems by integrating computer science methods with effective management strategies, and by developing and deploying computer applications.

  • Workload

    Full-Time Study Load

    As a full-time student, you can expect to commit around 48 hours of study per week. This includes class time and independent study. You may need to factor more time for examination study and practical work & placements.

  • Credit for Prior Learning

    Applicants with a Bachelor degree in Computer Science may apply for credit for 24 credit points (1 session).

    If you have completed prior studies or relevant professional experience, you can request course credit or subject exemptions to reduce the duration and cost of your program.

    Credit for prior learning evaluates your previous study or work experience related to your chosen subjects.
