Patrick O'Regan Business student at UOW Shoalhaven

Meet Patrick

I studied: Bachelor of Commerce (Accountancy)
My UOW Shoalhaven experience: The smaller class size and good tutors at UOW Shoalhaven really provided for great learning outcomes. We were a tight knit group with a couple of mature age from different career backgrounds, with local working accountants but looking to further their skills. It wasn't the typical university experience you’d imagine when leaving high school but was a great experience for me.

Julia Picton Education UOW Shoalhaven student

Meet Julie

I studied: Bachelor of Arts and Master of Teaching (Primary)
My UOW Shoalhaven experience: The opportunities I have been given, the activities I have been involved in, the support I have received, I can’t speak highly enough of it all. It was my first time studying as a mature aged student. It’s a beautiful campus and it feels like all the staff just want you to achieve and to do well.

UOW Shoalhaven Nursing student Robert Allotta in Nursing lab

Meet Robert

I am studying: Nursing
My UOW Shoalhaven experience: Being a smaller campus the tutors and academics all get to know every student very well and this sense of community created a safe and supportive environment.
The benefits of studying close to home: Attending a University close to home allows for me to still remain in a job which I enjoy, while also being able to stay close to friends and family who work as a support system for myself

Paul Isaac, Doctor of Medicine UOW Shoalhaven student

Meet Paul

I am studying: Doctor of Medicine
The advantages of studying close to home: I think the unique advantage, especially in the realm of health, is that l am living, working and studying all within the one community. This allows me to gain a rich depth of knowledge into the values and culture of my community. It not only makes me a better medical student for more patients, but it actually makes me part of the larger Shoalhaven family.

Jade McIntyre Social Science student

Jade McIntyre

The benefits of studying close to home: Studying close to home cuts down on the amount of time I am away from my family. It also means I am building relationships with students in my local area which allows for meeting up for study groups.

Lily Wright Social Work UOW Shoalhaven student

Meet Lily

I studied: Bachelor of Social Work
I like my degree because: I wanted to study a Bachelor of Social Work because I wanted to gain enough knowledge for me to help people. One of the most important things I’ve learnt about this degree is that it’s very rewarding, being able to support people to achieve what they desire.

Study nursing at UOW

Growing up in a rural town myself and being in New South Wales, I was quite interested in regional health. By studying at Wollongong University, I've been able to do a four week placement in Broken Hill and see some of the differences in health care out there. I've also been able to go out to Alice Springs and see different healthcare centres and hospitals there and that's really opened my eyes to all the different things that I can do in rural health.

Giving back to his community

Meet Patrick, a Shoalhaven business owner, raised in St Georges Basin, and UOW graduate who studied Accountancy at UOW Shoalhaven. Patrick is committed to giving back to his community. He talked to us about his study experience and the program linking students and young professionals, with local businesses and career opportunities.

Hi, my name is Patrick. I grew up in St Georges Basin. I studied a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in accountancy. I graduated from the Shoalhaven campus of the University of Wollongong.

I was a first generation university student. From a very young age mum and dad were very encouraging for me to try and get some formal education and and assisted me to try and pursue that at all, at all costs, basically.

I guess it come to me at an early age that I wanted to do accounting and commerce, and then choosing the Shoalhaven campus as a place to study for me, this was a logical choice basically. The small class size, the good tutors, really provided for great learning outcomes. So just a couple of mature age people that were coming from different careers, people that were working for local businesses, that accounting was a career progression for them.

It's important that we have these regional campuses and that our regional campuses are connecting students with business and that, you know, students at the University, in the business sector are working together to try and create a collaborative approach. But I truly see the role of the campus as that gateway, that connection piece between students, whether they're at high school, studying students at the moment and that connection to local business, basically. And so many of my local businesses, that are clients of mine, and desperate for more people who were in such a skill shortage here on the South Coast.

So it's really important that we tell people that that there is career opportunity here. And I think the University can play a big factor in trying to make that happen.

We're running a pilot program, which is a new and refurbished mentor program, and we're really hoping to mentor young professionals and university students and try and keep them in the Shoalhaven as a key outcome.

I've got a month old daughter at home and really looking forward to raising her here locally. I love to give back to the community and for me, work is is still exciting. I'm really happy with my career now. I'm really enjoying the work life balance I can achieve on the South Coast and that's exciting as well.
