UOW Tax Clinic
Free tax assistance for the Illawarra and South Coast
The UOW Tax Clinic provides free tax assistance to communities in the Illawarra and South Coast regions.
Assistance is available to eligible individuals and small business who meet the following criteria:
- Are unable to access tax assistance due to economic, social or personal factors;
- Currently not represented by a tax professional;
- Are an Australian citizen or permanent resident; and/or
- Are an individual or small business entity.
- Are a current UOW student
The UOW Tax Clinic support is provided by UOW students from the School of Business, under the supervision of experienced tax practitioners and UOW academic staff.
The UOW Tax Clinic receives grant funding from the Australian Government as part of the National Tax Clinic program. Funding from Student Services and Amenities Fees (SSAF) is also received to offer tax assistance to current UOW students.
Assistance is offered face-to-face and via phone and online.

UOW Tax Clinic assistance
The UOW Tax Clinic may be able to assist you on tax topics including:
- MyGov and Australian Taxation Office (ATO) online tools;
- Tax File Number (TFN) registration;
- tax advice on income and deductions, Goods and Services Tax (GST), Pay as you go (PAYG), Capital Gains Tax, HELP debt and small business tax;
- tax debt including payment arrangements and hardship requests;
- tax and superannuation support for international labour mobility workers;
- Income Tax Return lodgements;
- Australian Business Number (ABN) and GST registration;
- Business Activity Statement (BAS) lodgement; and
- ATO disputes.
Business hours
- Wednesday 9 - 4pm.
- Thursday 10 - 3pm.
UOW Tax Clinic will be open weekly on the above days and times.
Bookings are encouraged. Walk-ins accepted.

The UOW Tax Clinic is a student-led education service. It is offered through Work Integrated Learning (WIL) and Internships, giving students the opportunity to gain practical accounting experience and understand the tax profession, alongside the development of their professional, communication, and advocacy skills.

What documents do I need to bring?
- Identification, previous tax returns, income statements, and any other relevant documents.
Is the service really free?
- Yes, our services are completely free for eligible individuals and businesses.
What if I cant get there face to face?
- We offer support via phone and video conferencing. Just complete the “Application for Assistance” form and well get back to you to organise a time to chat.
How should I prepare for my Tax Clinic appointment?
- Where possible, we prioritise the use of clients' myGov account. This makes the process straightforward and efficient, but also educates and sets up clients' system or future years.
If you are able, please ensure your myGov is set up and linked to the ATO before your visit. Guidance on this can be found on the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) website or via the "Case Study videos" tab below. We will be happy to help you during your appointment if you are unable to set up your myGov.
Who will be in my Tax Clinic appointment?
- An experienced tax agent will lead your appointment. As this is a student-led clinic, one or two students will sit in on your appointment too. Please let the team know if you have any concerns or requests regarding this.
How do I get there?
- If you are catching public transport, the UOW main campus and UOW innovation campus are both on the free Gong Shuttle route.
Is there parking available?
- Parking is available if you drive. Spaces, however, fill up during session so please allow more time. The Tax Clinic will cover the cost of your parking.
- At UOW Main Campus, park in one of the casual parking areas in P3, P4, P5 and P8.
- At Innovation Campus park in P1.
Please let one of the team know upon arrival if you have driven to your appointment and they can validate your parking.
