Overview

The Master of Philosophy provides specialised research training for students preparing for a career in academia, government and industry; and to provide practising engineers with the means to increase their knowledge and upgrade their qualifications.

The Master of Philosophy comprises 24 credit points of coursework and a 72 credit point thesis.

  • Academic Entry Requirements

    An Honours degree with 2nd Class Division 2 or higher,
    OR
    A coursework master’s degree with an equivalent average mark of 60+ or a GPA of 2.8 out of 4.

    Research-related and professional experience will also be considered when assessing qualifications. The Head of Postgraduate Studies for the relevant unit will approve entry into the Master of Philosophy based on academic results, research, and professional experience.

    Higher Degree Research applicants must provide supporting material with their application. Please refer to the Future Students: Postgraduate website for detailed information.

    Students are advised to contact a potential supervisor to discuss their project prior to applying for admission.

    Candidates with a coursework master’s degree or a 4-year Bachelor Honours degree in the same discipline may be granted up to 24 credit points of advanced standing for the coursework component of the Master of Philosophy.

  • Workload

    Full-Time Study Load

    As a full-time student, you can expect to commit around 48 hours of study per week. This includes class time and independent study. You may need to factor more time for examination study and practical work & placements.

    If you have completed prior studies or relevant professional experience, you can request course credit or subject exemptions to reduce the duration and cost of your program.

    Credit for prior learning evaluates your previous study or work experience related to your chosen subjects.
