The Master of Psychology (Clinical) provides a comprehensive program of study of the professional practice of psychology including assessment, intervention, communication and ethics. It also provides specialised training and supervised practice in the assessment and intervention skills of clinical psychologists. Supervised research is also undertaken over the two years of study.
This course is for graduates of a four-year accredited psychology program. The Master of Psychology (Clinical) is accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) as a 5th and 6th year program of study for the purpose of full registration as a psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia, and to provide preparation for entry into a registrar program leading to an area of practice endorsement in clinical psychology with the Psychology Board of Australia.
The Master of Professional Psychology is for graduates of a four-year accredited psychology program. The primary aim is to provide a 5th year of supervised practice and structured learning to prepare candidates for a final year of supervised internship in the field of psychological practice, prior to applying for general registration as a psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia.
The Master of Professional Psychology provides one year of full-time education in the professional practice of psychology that:
- Forms the foundation for professional practice, building on the existing knowledge and skills base acquired as part of an APAC-accredited (Australian Psychology Accreditation Council) four-year undergraduate course;
- Takes an evidence-based approach based to the scientist-practitioner model;
- Is broad and generalist in nature; and
- Is accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) as meeting the requirements of a 5th year program of study, allowing progression towards registration as a psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia.
Teaching methods include a combination of lectures, workshops, skills training, online and supervised work-based practicums, both at the University's Northfields Psychology Clinic and at external placements. The emphasis is on skills training and includes demonstration sessions, audio-visual recording of assessment and therapy, case presentations, role-play activities and feedback and reflection.
The Master of Professional Psychology (School Psychology) specialisation is for graduates of a four-year accredited psychology program who are interested in pursuing a career as a school psychologist. This specialisation is only available to applicants who hold a graduate scholarship offered by the NSW Department of Education.
The School Psychology specialisation will prepare you to work as a school psychologist by providing a 5th year of structured learning and supervised practice in the school setting. Following completion of this 5th year degree, you undertake a 6th year of supervised internship within a school setting, prior to applying for general registration as a psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia.
The program provides one year of full-time education in the professional practice of psychology that:
- Forms the foundation for professional practice, building on existing knowledge and skills
- Takes an evidence-based approach based to the scientist-practitioner model;
- Is broad and generalist in nature; and
To prepare you for a career as a school psychologist, you will focus on School Psychology in Context through supervised practicum in NSW schools, research, reflective practice and applied interventions.

Scholarship:
The Master of Professional Psychology (School Psychology) is only available to applicants who are offered the School Counselling Service Graduate Scholarship Program from the Department of Education.
This scholarship offers:
- Up to $30,000 tuition allowance for full-time, full fee paying students** (**The scholarship benefit will be adjusted based on the university’s tuition fees for the program)
- Up to $6,000 appointment allowance* (*Additional benefits may be available to interns and employees working in certain rural NSW locations).
- $1,500 textbook and incidentals allowance
- Supervised practicum placements in schools
- Induction program
- Supervised internship and ongoing employment as a school psychologist in NSW public schools in areas of workforce need upon satisfactory completion of the Master of Professional Psychology (School Psychology) program
Eligibility:
To be eligible to apply for the Graduate Scholarship for the Master of Professional Psychology (School Psychology), you must:
- have completed a four year sequence of Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) approved psychology studies
- met requirements to undertake the Master of Professional Psychology (School Psychology) program at the University of Wollongong. View the requirements here.
- have submitted an application for the Master of Professional Psychology (School Psychology) program at the University of Wollongong
- be willing to work in geographic areas of workforce need (refer to the work location nomination form)
- have or be able to obtain a NSW Working with Children Check clearance
- Australian citizen, permanent resident or a New Zealand citizen
- hold a current and valid NSW driver's licence

Ways to pay for your degree

Eligible students will be automatically offered a CSP if places are still available. This means the Government will fund up to 75% of your tuition fees.

In addition to CSPs, eligible students can access HECS-HELP to defer all or part of their course fees.
