Selecting your engineering major

Choosing your engineering major or minor

Selecting a major is an important step in your Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) journey. It shapes not only what you'll study but also the opportunities you will have along the way. It is highly recommended that you make your choice before starting your second year, so your subjects and study plan align smoothly.

Whether you are curious about the different engineering majors and minors, or ready to declare your choice, this page answers the questions students ask most. You'll also find helpful links to videos and resources to help you explore each major.

Engineering major/minor FAQs

What is a major/minor?

A major is your main area of study, usually about one-third of your degree. A minor is a smaller set of subjects in another area, giving you a secondary focus alongside your major. For more information about majors and minors, visit AskUOW Knowledge Search.

Can I complete the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) without selecting a major?

No – you must select a major and complete the relevant subjects. There is not a “no major” option for the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours).

How do I choose the right engineering major for me?

Consider your interests, strengths, career goals, and job prospects in each field. Attend info sessions, talk to advisors or senior students.

What is the final date to choose my major?

You should choose your major before enrolling in second year subjects. It’s recommended that you declare your major by the end of your first year to stay on track and ensure you meet your course requirements.

Are there any benefits to declaring a major before the end of my first year?

Yes. Declaring your major early can open up some great opportunities, including:

  • Major-specific scholarships, internships, cadetships, and job opportunities
  • Tailored academic advising
  • Professional societies and student clubs related to your major.

It also helps you plan your subjects correctly and make the most of your time at uni.

Where can I find information about majors if I am still undecided?

Refer to the UOW Handbook for details on each major, including subjects and course requirements. You can also check out the YouTube videos linked below to hear directly from academics about each major and where it can take you.

How do I officially declare my major?

You can declare or change your major in SOLS by selecting 'Major Maintenance' from the left-hand menu and following the prompts

If your chosen major isn't available, or if you want to declare or change a minor, complete the Application to Declare or Change a Major, Specialisation or Minor online.

Can I do a double major?

Yes. You'll need to apply for a course transfer to the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Double Major) - course code 1857.

Can I complete an Engineering minor as well as a major?

Yes. You can complete a minor in addition to your major, but it must be in a different discipline. Check the Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences section of the UOW handbook for approved minors.

Can I complete a minor from a different faculty?

Yes. You can choose a minor from the General Schedule of Minors, which includes options from across UOW (subject to availability and prerequisites).

If I have already declared a major, can I change it?

Yes.  All Engineering majors in the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) share a common first year, so it’s possible to change your major, especially if the change is made before starting your second year.

You can declare or change your major in SOLS by selecting 'Major Maintenance' from the left-hand menu and following the prompts.

If you cannot select your choice, or to declare or change a minor, please complete an Application to Declare or Change a Major, Specialisation or Minor online.

Will changing my major extend my time?

Not usually, as long as the change happens before your second year and your subject progression aligns with the new major. Speak with an academic advisor for advice.

What alternatives are available if I’m unsure whether I want to continue with Engineering?

Not sure if Engineering is the right fit? That is ok, you do have options. After completing at least one session of study, you can apply for a course transfer to another course. You might also like to explore the 3-year Bachelor of Engineering Technology, which has many of the same subjects as the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) but offers a different pathway.

How does declaring a major affect my career options?

Your major can influence the industries and types of roles you're most qualified for. However, engineering skills are highly transferable, and many graduates build careers across different disciplines or outside their original major.

Who can I talk to for advice about choosing a major?

You can contact the relevant Academic Program Director (APD) for your major or minor you are interested in, or reach out to the ASKUOW team at Student Central for guidance and support.

How do I know who the APD is?

You can find the Academic Program Director (APD) by visiting the UOW Course Handbook. Just select your degree and click on 'Contact Details' in the left-hand menu.
