PACOP's education and training program assists aged care providers in implementing PACOP's assessment and response framework, which facilitates outcomes measurement and quality improvement.

By participating in PACOP, providers gain access to a free, comprehensive workforce education and training program. This integration of PACOP training enables aged care providers to demonstrate ongoing workforce development, allowing them to respond to changing care needs and deliver high-quality palliative and end-of-life care.

The PACOP team collaborates closely with participating aged care providers to develop customised training plans that support sustainable workforce development practices tailored to the sector's specific needs. A blended learning approach ensures that PACOP training provides equitable opportunities for participation nationwide. The PACOP education and training program assists aged care providers in implementing the PACOP assessment and response framework, which facilitates outcomes measurement and quality improvement.

 

PACOP's blended learning approach provides:

  • A Train the Trainer model, supporting sustainable workforce development practices for a whole team approach at the point of care.
  • Access to evidence-based self-directed online learning courses, suitable for a micro-learning approach supporting learning in as little as 5-10 minute increments.
  • Virtual education and training to support identified learning needs of care teams via in-services and webinars.
  • Access to in-person PACOP workshops, which immerse staff in a full day of learning to develop knowledge and clinical leadership skills.
  • Optional virtual education and quality improvement events and webinars.
  • Support and mentoring through participation in Communities of Practice facilitated by the PACOP team.

Introduction to PACOP

This course provides learners with all they need to know about Palliative Aged Care Outcomes Program. They will have a good understanding of how the program systematically works to improve palliative and end of life care for older Australians through the use of validated assessment tools. The topics help staff learn about the PACOP assessment and response framework and how to use it to identify palliative and end-of-life care needs, inform care planning responses, monitor symptom distress in residents and communicate these changes to health providers, residents, and their families.

Completing the course is free, and there are no prior learning requirements. Upon completion, learners will receive a certificate of completion. The course has a completion time estimate of 1 hour.

PACOP Fundamentals

This course is designed for the aged care workforce, targeted at Registered and Enrolled Nurses, to enhance palliative care knowledge and clinical assessment skills in residential aged care homes. The framework supports staff with early recognition of deterioration and identification of palliative and end-of-life care needs. Staff will learn evidence-based clinical responses to guide delivery of best practice palliative care, and a clinical protocol for a whole team approach. 

Completing the course is free, and there are no prior learning requirements. Upon completion, learners will receive a certificate of completion. The course has a completion time estimate of 3-4hrs.

PCOC-SAS for Care Staff

This course aims to support care staff using the PACOP assessment and response framework and may also be used as an introduction to the PCOC-Symptom Assessment Scale (SAS) for the broader aged-care workforce. Completing this course will build confidence and understanding in monitoring symptom distress using a validated assessment tool. Staff will learn how to complete the assessment when providing routine care to residents. Using the clinical protocol to escalate symptom distress to Registered Nurses and supervisors, improves communication and the delivery of palliative care.

Completing the course is free, and there are no prior learning requirements. Upon completion, learners will receive a certificate of completion. The course has a completion time estimate of 1-1.5 hours.
