Overview

The Graduate Certificate in Fisheries Policy is tailored for individuals seeking to specialise in fisheries policy, management, or representation within the fisheries sector. This program equips professionals, including fisheries policy officers, junior managers, and government enforcement officers, with a career-relevant qualification. It will also enable industry and non-government organisation representatives to gain a recognised policy qualification.

This degree provides a broad understanding of the international legal and policy framework within which fisheries resources are managed, conserved and developed. It also examines the principles of fisheries management, including aspects relating to science, economics and law and how these are used in decision-making. It emphasises the need for sustainable policies and adhering to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

By studying with UOW's Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS), you will benefit from the close links it has established with government agencies, international businesses and non-government organisations in Australia, the Indo-Pacific region and globally, including a long-term relationship with the Royal Australian Navy.

During the degree, you will examine fisheries economics and fisheries development and their role in the sustainable management, conservation and development of fisheries resources. You will also explore how fisheries policy, management and decision-making are influenced by legal, economic and policy considerations.

You will also explore the information, processes and systems required to achieve sustainable fisheries management and different fisheries management objectives. Areas of study include fisheries development, fisheries economics, international fisheries law, fisheries governance, monitoring, control and surveillance, fish trade, and the social dimensions of fisheries management and policy.

Upon successful completion of the Graduate Certificate in Fisheries Policy, you may enrol in the Master of Fisheries and receive credit for the four subjects completed within the graduate certificate.

  • Workload

    Full-Time Study Load

    As a full-time student, you can expect to commit around 48 hours of study per week. This includes class time and independent study. You may need to factor more time for examination study, practical work and placements.

  • Credit for Prior Learning

    The maximum amount of external credit that can be awarded at the postgraduate level is 50% of the credit point value of the UOW course.
