Statement:

I’m running for ASSH Undergraduate Representative and would love your support. Universities should operate in the students’ best interests. If I am elected as ASSH Undergraduate Representative I will advocate for policies like:

1. A Net Zero Campus

2. No more staff or subject cuts

3. Proper wages for casual staff

4. Students money in student hands

I’m a second year Bachelor of Science: Environmental and Heritage Management student and love the diversity that the ASSH faculty offers. As an experienced advocate, I would work hard to change this university for the better. Hope I can count on your vote :) Voting is via SOLS.

Position nominated: Undergraduate Faculty Student Representative Position in the Faculty of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities for 2026.

Statement:

I’m studying a Bachelor of Arts in Western Civilisation and Law, this has given me experience in a multitude of fields within the Arts and Social Sciences faculty. I am the Vice-President of the UOW Debating Society, where I expand my network and communication across demographics. In 2023 I served on the NSW Regional Youth Taskforce, representing the young people of the Central Coast. In this role, I successfully campaigned for better integration of life skills into government services. If elected, maintaining funding and prevalence for the Arts would be fundamental in how I represent the interests of my peers. I would endeavour to ensure that the position of existing schools within the faculty are not diminished in the face of the BAL merger. I believe that the University should engage in more open dialogue and communication with students about the future of their degrees, so that my peers are confident in their futures.

Position nominated: Undergraduate Faculty Student Representative Position in the Faculty of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities for 2026.

Statement:

Hi! I'm Talia Omac, a fourth year Arts/Law student at the University of Wollongong, majoring in Spanish and minoring in Cultural Studies. I am passionate about student voices being heard; we all deserve a say in the decisions that affect us. I have been a volunteer 'Compañera de Camino', acting as a representative of and liaising with the Spanish language cohort to enact changes to the way the subject is run. For example, we successfully instated later submission times for weekly quizzes and set up coffee catch-ups for language immersion. It's both the small changes like this, and larger policy changes, that I am eager to effect as a Faculty representative to help improve student experience. My advocacy skills are informed by my paralegal work, for example, as volunteer paralegal with Rising Tide, where I have connected with lawyers, government departments and protestors to organise appeals for climate protestors. I am excited to bring these skills to a student representative role, where I can advocate for you and your needs in the same way. I want to ensure diverse perspectives are truly heard and acted upon so that UOW can serve as both a welcoming and inspiring institution.

Talia Omac

Meet the students who have nominated to fill the Undergraduate Faculty Student Representative position in the Faculty of Business and Law for 2026.

Position nominated: Undergraduate Faculty Student Representative Position in the Faculty of Business and Law.

Statement:

My name is Alyssa Afiouni, and I am nominating for the role of Faculty Student Representative. Through my work in student engagement roles, I have had the privilege of connecting with a wide range of students across different courses, backgrounds, and experiences. Whether assisting at events, supporting peers with academic or administrative processes, or maintaining open channels of communication, I have made it a priority to be approachable and reliable. These roles have allowed me to understand the concerns, ambitions, and challenges faced by students and to build meaningful connections that extend beyond the classroom. I believe student representation is about carrying those voices forward. As UOW moves into a new faculty structure, this is a pivotal time to ensure that student perspectives remain central to decision-making. If elected, I will continue to foster connection, collaboration, and community, while ensuring that the needs of students are communicated clearly to faculty leadership. This position offers a valuable opportunity to strengthen the relationship between students and the university, and I am committed to representing you with integrity, dedication, and transparency. Together, we can create a supportive environment where every student feels heard and valued.

Position nominated: Undergraduate Faculty Student Representative Position in the Faculty of Business and Law.

Statement:

Hi, I’m Cameron Cortes, a penultimate year Law and Arts student. I’m keen to advance the student experience here at UOW, ever since I joined the UOW Law Students’ Society as Second Year Representative. From there, I’ve taken on a PAL tutoring position, LSS mentoring roles, and various positions within the LSS, up to the current Presidency which I now hold. I have also been at the forefront of founding the UOW Liberal Arts Society which I have had the privilege of leading as President this year. Whether as Undergraduate Representative, or as BAL Faculty Representative, I believe that I am the candidate to vote for because I am experienced leader, because I have already begun to build the contacts and rapport to pursue our interests as faculties are soon merged, within both Law and Arts schools, and because I will be an approachable and available leader to those in degrees I may not be as familiar with. Ultimately, I have a passion to ensure that we get value out of our experience, and that the University is in the best shape to provide us with the tools to succeed in the years to come. Thank you for your support!

Statement:

Jessica is a first-year Bachelor of Laws student at the University of Wollongong. She is a passionate and ambitious member of the community, who aspires to enhance general wellbeing. She is eager to promote societal evolution, especially, within the legal landscape. Additionally, she readily contributes within the BAL faculty such as through her participation in the LLB Program Committee in which she discussed with the Dean of Law regarding first-year perspectives on numerous aspects of Law school. This included teaching styles, travel barriers, online/in-person lectures and building connections with peers. She is motivated to advocate for what students within the BAL faculty wish to see happen at UOW, acting as a bridge between the student body and opportunities for suggestions. She values her peers’ input and wishes to implement initiatives guided by recommendations where possible. Jessica maintains balance amongst her academic life through creative endeavours such as nail design, dance and singing. She also loves to travel and learn new languages so she can communicate with many people around the world!

2025 Business and Law Undergrad re-electing | Junior Strategy Analyst | 2nd year Business Major

Hi,
I'm Linh, and I represent Business and Law undergraduate students on the Student Advisory Council and the Student Services and Amenities Committee in 2025. As a faculty representative, I’ve had the opportunity to share the perspectives of Business and Law students at every stage of UOW’s ongoing transformation. My favourite part of this role has been building stronger connections with my peers. Since being appointed, I’ve stayed after class more often and spoken with students from across Australia and around the world to hear their opinions, experiences, and challenges in both study and social life. With their support, I advocate for stability and for introducing changes to the Business and Law faculty in a way that best supports students.

Statement:

Hi, I am Lachlan, a first-year business student majoring in business analytics and accounting. I am originally from the Southern Highlands and moved to Wollongong to study. I have spent much of my time in voluntary roles such as the RFS and hosting charity events for the starlight foundation. I spend my free time exercising, going to the beach or hanging out with friends and family. I have often thought to myself 'why don't they do this?' or 'This way would work a lot better...'. In this role I will be able to advocate for us in a meaningful way. By choosing me, you choose to be represented by someone who is confident to raise concerns, strategise, and advocate on your behalf. A person, who is approachable and willing to 'get it done'.

Statement:

Hello, My name is Manny Lewamba and I was born and raised in Kenya, where I lived until the age of thirteen before moving to rural Australia. This transition was both a significant challenge and a turning point in my personal and academic journey. Adapting to a new country, culture, and education system required resilience, determination, and the willingness to learn quickly. I often found myself navigating language differences, new expectations, and the social challenges of building connections in an unfamiliar environment. Despite these obstacles, I remained committed to academic excellence, consistently striving to not only meet but exceed expectations. These experiences have equipped me with valuable qualities that I believe make me a strong candidate for the role of Student Representative for the Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health (SMAH). I have developed empathy and an appreciation for diverse perspectives, as I understand firsthand the struggles students may face in balancing personal circumstances with academic responsibilities. I have also learned the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and effective communication in overcoming challenges. I am eager to use these skills to represent and support my peers, ensuring their voices are heard and valued. My journey has shaped me into a motivated, resilient individual who is committed to fostering advocacy, inclusivity, collaboration, and academic success. Kind regards, Manny Lewamba

Statement:

Hello! My name is Carmela Pain, and I am currently completing a Bachelor of Marine Science, having transferred into UOW after receiving the Faculty of Science Outstanding Achievement Award during my Diploma of Science at UOW College. My journey at UOW has been one of growth, resilience, and community, and I am eager to give back by representing my peers as a SMAH Faculty Student Representative. I bring a strong background in student engagement and leadership, both within and beyond the classroom. Through the New Colombo Plan mobility program in New Caledonia, I represented UOW internationally, engaging in cross-cultural collaboration and research. Locally, I have developed strong interpersonal and communication skills through work in hospitality leadership roles and through active involvement in student initiatives. These experiences have strengthened my ability to listen carefully, advocate effectively, and work collaboratively with diverse groups. As SMAH transitions through structural change, I am committed to ensuring that students’ voices are heard and that their needs remain central to decision-making. I see this as not just a governance role but as an opportunity to empower my peers, foster transparency, and contribute to building a stronger, more supportive academic community for all SMAH students.

Meet the students who have nominated to fill the Faculty International Student Representative position in the Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health for 2026.

Position nominated: Faculty International Student Representative Position in the Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health

Statement:

My name is Gwenn Ashley Go, and I am a 2nd year Bachelor of Nursing student at the University of Wollongong. I am grateful to have received the 2024 UOW Excellence Scholarship and to have been recognised on the Dean’s List, awarded to the top 5% of students in my degree program. In my first year, I was honoured as the Top Nursing Student across all UOW campuses, an achievement that inspires me to keep working hard and to support my peers along the way. But beyond academics, what really matters to me is student community and representation. I’ve had the privilege of serving as the First-Year Student Representative at UOW Liverpool, founding the UOW Liverpool Nursing Club (which I now lead as President), and representing students through the NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association. These experiences have helped me grow as a leader and, more importantly, as someone who listens and advocates for others. As an international student, I know firsthand how challenging it can be to adjust to a new country, culture, and academic system. That’s why I want to make sure international students feel supported, included, and heard at every level. Outside of uni, I work as a Nursing Assistant in both aged care and hospital settings. That role has taught me to be adaptable, responsible, and respectful of different perspectives — values I’d bring with me as your Faculty representative. I’m running for the SMAH International Student Representative because I believe every student deserves to have their voice respected when decisions are made. If elected, I’ll focus on making sure international students feel connected, supported, and set up to succeed — both academically and personally.

I am passionate about fostering cultural exchange, academic growth, and professional opportunities while ensuring that every international student feels empowered to thrive within SMAH. If elected, I will dedicate myself to representing our international community by listening to your concerns, advocating for your needs, and collaborating with both staff and students to make SMAH a welcoming and inclusive faculty for all.

These experiences have strengthened my ability to advocate, listen, and work collaboratively with both staff and peers. Position nominated: Postgraduate Faculty Student Representative Position in the Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences

Statement:

For those who don’t know me, I’m Aaron, a PhD candidate and high-distinction student who’s also been a tutor, lecturer, peer coach, and accessibility support. I’ve sat in your lectures, marked your assignments, and mentored students one-on-one. I’ve seen the late-night panic before deadlines, the gap between a subject and a career, and that sinking feeling when feedback leaves you more confused than when you started. That’s why I’m running. Because university should be more than grades. It should give us the confidence, skills, and support to succeed beyond graduation. My experience has shown me a clear blueprint for success: practical assessments that build confidence, feedback that helps us improve, and teaching that connects directly to our future. I want to help shape a curriculum that genuinely prepares us for the world we’re entering. That means building a career-ready curriculum where real-world projects and soft skills are part of every student’s journey. It also means using technology, including AI, in ways that cut down stress, streamline admin, and let us focus on learning instead of constantly chasing deadlines. And just as importantly, we need feedback systems that are more responsive and consistent, so students feel heard and supported. We also need clearer pathways into work, with stronger connections between what we study and the opportunities waiting for us after uni. I’ve lived these challenges alongside you, and I know we can do better. Let’s build a faculty that is innovative, supportive, and truly prepares us for the future so every student leaves ready for what comes next.
