Personality disorders affect 6.5% of Australians - more than 1.6 million people. For many, symptoms begin in adolescence, affecting how young people see themselves, manage emotions, and connect with others. Nearly half of community mental health patients live with a personality disorder, yet families often feel helpless and excluded from treatment. The toll is staggering: $2.7 billion lost annually in productivity, increased suicide risk, and limited access to specialised care - especially in rural and remote communities.
Project Air has developed interventions that work. The Project Air Stepped Care Model offers a cost-effective approach to care by introducing brief interventions between acute and community services, resulting in reduced hospital bed days, lower risk of re-presentation within 28 days, and annual savings of USD$2,720 per patient. One year of therapy reduces hospital costs by $21,431 per patient and saves at least $8,000 annually. Young people learn to manage emotions and build healthy relationships, families gain tools to support their loved ones and communities' access world-class treatment, no matter how remote.
Unfortunately, critical gaps remain. We cannot currently offer a free advisory service for families in crisis. People on pensions cannot afford our conference events. Regional communities can face challenges in accessing support.
With your support we can:
Personality disorders are treatable. Recovery is possible. Your support ensures evidence-based care reaches everyone who needs it, regardless of location or financial circumstances.
