Credit for prior learning

Credit for Prior Learning

Study that you have already completed may count as credit towards your UOW degree. This could reduce the length and cost of your course.

UOW has arrangements with many overseas institutions that may allow you to reduce the time it will take to complete your degree. Not all UOW courses are eligible – please see the course information on Course Finder.

Eligibility for Credit for Prior Learning

UOW has formal credit for prior learning arrangements with many overseas institutions, allowing students to reduce the normal full-time course duration by one or two years of study.

UOW currently recognises courses undertaken at specified institutions in many countries. Institutions with which we have credit transfer pathways are listed by country:

Definitions and types of credit

  • Specified credit – which is granted when an exact or near exact equivalence to a UOW course can be demonstrated.

  • Unspecified credit – which is granted when an exact or near exact equivalence cannot be demonstrated. Unspecified credit is also granted for elective courses.

In highly prescribed courses it may not be possible to use all unspecified credit.

Credit for prior learning is also available for a range of courses offered by TAFE and private institutions in Australia.

Even if a credit for prior learning pathway for an institution does not appear on the website, applicants can still apply for credit for prior learning, by attaching details of the curriculum, including subject descriptions, of the studies for which credit is being sought.

Course and subject relevancy and a credit average (65%) are required for maximum exemption in most courses.

Credit for prior learning does not guarantee a place into a degree at the University of Wollongong. Applicants who achieve an appropriate score in a relevant qualification may be considered for admission. Admission is dependent on the completion of an appropriate qualification, the level of academic performance achieved and the number of places available.
