Legal internship program
Clinical education programs for law students have been available for many years in some Australian law schools. The objective of such programs is to provide an understanding of the human, social and policy contexts of law and legal practice. At UOW Law, this objective is met through the subject LLB 3397/3396 Legal Internship in which you will complete 20 days of professional experience.
We believe that practical experience is a vital part of legal training. At UOW Law, a legal internship is not simply ‘work experience’, it is an important learning tool that gives students an opportunity to observe and reflect on the law in action and apply legal knowledge to real life situations while, at the same time, discern career options and build professional networks.
LLB3397/3396 runs all year in 3 separate sessions or instances: LIP 1, LIP 2 and LIP Summer. These sessions are non-standard sessions so key dates such as enrolment/withdrawal dates and grade release dates will not always align with standard session dates. For example, the LIP Summer session runs from the end of Spring session until the Friday before Autumn session commences in the new year. Accordingly, LIP Summer grades are not released until early April each year. Please view the program dates when planning for when to undertake your internship. Students cannot enrol themselves in the subject but are enrolled after internship arrangements are approved by the Law Internships team.
Internships can be arranged by the Law School or students may arrange one themselves which must then be approved by the Law Internships team. For more information on what is involved with each option, please review the program resources including the LLB 3397/3396 Student Handbook (PDF)
