Types of short courses

Microcredentials

A UOW microcredential is formally assessed and aligns with a university level of study. Some courses lead to credit into specific UOW undergraduate or postgraduate courses. Credit information is available on the course registration page. All UOW microcredentials align with the National Microcredential Framework.

Continuing education

Continuing education courses are offered in a range of professional development areas to help you attain specific skills and knowledge. These courses do not have direct credit arrangements into UOW degree programs in place, but may form part of an application for credit based on informal or non-formal learning.

Energy and power 

UOW's Australian Power Quality Research Centre offer the following courses:

  • Application of Australian Standards for Management of Harmonics, Unbalance & Flicker [CE]
    Increase your understanding of the standards and the methodologies for allocation of each the specific disturbance emission levels.
  • Application of the NER for Connection of Renewable Energy [CE]
    The course covers a number of topics related to the application of the NER and system strength impact assessments, including modelling techniques required for the connection of generators. 
  • Battery Energy Storage [CE]
    Learn about the capabilities of battery energy storage systems, their advantages and disadvantages and how they can best be integrated into the electricity networks of the future.
  • Fundamentals of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) [CE]
    An overview of the operation and integration of DER into the modern power system.
  • Integration of Renewable & Distributed Generation [CE]
    Gain a practical understanding of the principles, practices and problems associated with grid integration of distributed energy resources. 
  • Introduction to Power Quality of Electrical Supply [CE]
    This course covers power quality problems including voltage sags, harmonics, transients and light flicker. Participants will learn analysis fundamentals, instrumentation techniques and methods of improving power quality by both network and plant modifications.
  • Advanced Quality of Electrical Supply [CE]
    This course is an advanced course which builds on the ‘Introduction to Power Quality of Electrical Supply’ course and is designed to expand the coverage of selected power quality topics in order to give participants practical skills in the analysis and mitigation of specific problems.
  • Introduction to Power Systems [CE]
    The course provides an introduction to electricity supply basics and is aimed at those transitioning to the electricity supply industry or those looking for a refresher on power systems.
  • Introduction to PSCAD [CE]
    The course provides an introduction to the use of PSCAD and EMT modelling for the purposes of undertaking power system transient studies.
  • Substation Design [CE]
    The course is designed to assist organisations in the training of new and existing staff in the fundamentals of substation design.

    Make your venue safer by learning how to identify, call out and act on undesirable behaviour and harassment in licensed venues.

 

UOW's Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources & Security (ANCORS) provides the following courses:

  • Fisheries Management [CE]
    The course examines the international principles for sustainable fisheries management, ecological aspects of fisheries, fisheries economics, fisheries data collection and analysis, and fisheries and coastal resource management.
  • International Fish Trade [CE]
    The course examines the interaction of international fisheries law and trade law, including health and sanitary requirements for fish processing and trade, and World Trade Organization (WTO) fisheries and environment related disputes.
  • International Fisheries Law [CE]
    The course examines the fisheries provisions of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, and the gaps and shortcomings in the law of the sea framework.
  • Law of the Sea [CE]
    The course offers a thorough analysis of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, focusing on legal and policy issues.
  • Maritime Regulation and Enforcement [CE]
    The course focuses on the specific enforcement and regulatory powers of states in the various maritime zones of jurisdiction.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

UOW short courses may be delivered fully online, face-to-face or by a combination of both. Check the individual short course registration page for details. 

UOW short course may range from 1 hour to several weeks. Please check the individual short course registration page for information on course dates and/or estimated total study time. 

Where a course has pre-requisites they will be listed on the course registration page. Please note that by registering to a course you acknowledge that you meet the eligibility criteria. 

UOW microcredentials may be credit bearing and may offer credit towards specific UOW award courses. Learners will need to accumulate a minimum of six credit points to convert to academic credit for a subject. Details are available on the individual short course registration page. The UOW Credit for Prior Learning Policy and Procedures will apply. 

No. You will not be a student by registering or participating in a UOW short course. We refer to short course participants as ‘learners’ to distinguish from award course students. If you are an international student you will not be eligible for student visas based on registration in a short course.

Digital credentials are online credentials, such as digital certificates and digital badges. They can be downloaded and/or shared online. Upon successful completion of the short course you will receive a digital certificate and/or a digital badge. UOW digital credentials can be securely accessed, shared and independently verified with a single click.

Course fees vary and are advertised on the short course registration page. Where a short course is offered for free, a fee may be charged for the issuing of a certification, in consideration of administrative costs to UOW. If this is the case the certification fee will be stated on the short course information page. 

You will be able to pay by credit card through a secure payment portal. Invoice payment may be possible for organisations who wish to enrol several of their employees. 

The short course information pages will tell you the refund arrangements for each particular program. In cases where no specific refund arrangement is in place, you will be entitled to a full refund if you cancel your registration more than 15 working days prior to the short course start date. If you cancel your registration with less than 15 working days notice, you may be entitled to a partial refund. Partial refunds are put in place to cover a variety costs associated with the delivery of a short course, such as payment processing fees, or hiring equipment, staff or venues for on-site workshops. Refunds after 15 days or for short courses that provide immediate access to learning materials are only granted in exceptional circumstances. All microcredentials will have an assessment component. Successful completion of the assessment task is required in order to receive a microcredential digital certificate or badge. The short course registration page will include information on any mandatory assessment components.

The UOW Short Course Learner Policy states our short course Terms and Conditions and applies to all learners undertaking offerings approved and promoted as short courses offered by UOW’s onshore campuses, or under third party arrangements, whether these offerings are undertaken by participants in Australia or overseas.

The Short Courses Product Disclosure Notice draws your attention to the sections in the UOW Short Course Leaner Policy that under the Fair Trading Act 1987 (NSW) may be regarded as terms that may substantially prejudice your interest as a consumer.
