Overview

Build the expertise to improve mental health outcomes and the skills to influence how care is delivered. The Master of Nursing (Mental Health) combines advanced mental health nursing knowledge with leadership, management, and practice improvement within contemporary healthcare settings. 
 
This degree is ideal if you're a Registered Nurse who wants to deepen your mental health expertise while developing the broader capabilities needed to influence practice, improve services, and contribute to better patient outcomes.  
 
You'll build advanced knowledge of contemporary mental health care, exploring national priorities such as suicidality, substance use, recovery-oriented practice, lived experience, and mental health across the lifespan. At the same time, you'll develop skills to help you become an effective leader and manager in healthcare settings. 
 
This broader focus sets the master's apart from courses focused solely on clinical specialisation and may support progression into advanced clinical, education, leadership, and management roles. Offered part-time and fully online, the degree is designed to fit around professional and personal commitments.

Whether you work in mental health, emergency, acute, or community settings, this degree helps you strengthen your specialist knowledge while building the confidence to respond to increasingly complex and evolving mental health needs.  
 
A key feature of the course is its focus on both specialist practice and leadership capability. Alongside advanced mental health subjects, you'll have the opportunity to study leadership, governance, health law and ethics, digital innovation, and healthcare systems. These areas help you understand how to lead change, navigate complex organisations, and contribute to service improvement within healthcare settings.  
 
The workplace-based Minor Project brings these capabilities together in a practical setting. From investigating challenges and analysing evidence through to developing recommendations, you'll apply your learning to a real-world issue while building skills in evaluation, quality improvement, and professional communication.  
 
The course is delivered by one of Australia's largest mental health nursing academic teams, including educators who remain active in clinical practice, research, and healthcare leadership. Teaching is informed by current issues and priorities affecting the Australian mental health sector, helping ensure your learning remains relevant to contemporary practice.  
 
You'll graduate with advanced mental health nursing knowledge, strengthened leadership capability, and practical experience applying evidence to real-world healthcare challenges.
