Overview

Designed for graduates with a background in mathematics and statistics, this degree provides the opportunity to consolidate and expand your existing mathematics and statistics knowledge while being equipped in the practice of mathematics in other disciplines such as computer science, business, science, and psychology. 

You will also develop skills in undertaking research on mathematical or statistical problems that arise in other disciplines, including how to effectively communicate and synthesise complex information with others. You will also complete a research or coursework-focused capstone project.

Fee subsidised places available

There is an opportunity to specialise further in areas including data science, financial mathematics, or applied statistics. Students who do not wish to choose a specialisation will work with the Academic Program Director to tailor your subject choices to align with your career goals and interests.

Special emphasis is placed on preparing graduates with practical experiences for employment across a range of industries.

Financial Mathematics (specialisation)

Utilise sophisticated mathematical and statistical modeling to solve real-world problems and gain an edge over your competition with our major in financial mathematics. You will develop the practical skills necessary to be a leader in the formulation, implementation and evaluation of the models used to structure transactions, manage risk and construct investment strategies.

The financial mathematics major will equip you with a range of analytic, modelling, statistical and computational skills that can be applied directly to the financial sector, as well as the broader business landscape. You will also complete a research or coursework-focused capstone project.

Accreditation & professional recognition

Accreditation for this newly developed course is currently being sought from the Australian Mathematical Society.

Admissions information

A range of admission options are available for students of all ages and academic backgrounds. The procedures governing admission are defined in UOW's Admissions Procedures, and the UOW College Admissions Policy.

A bachelor’s degree with an equivalent average mark of 50% with a major or minor in mathematics or statistics.

If applying based on a mathematics or statistics minor, it must include a minimum of 12 credit points of mathematics or statistics subjects at the 200-level or higher.

  • Domestic applicants with overseas qualifications

    If you have completed or partially completed studies at an approved university or tertiary institution, you may be eligible for entry to UOW. You'll need to provide academic records, and your course must be at least one-sixth complete. Non-English documents must include an official English translation.   • English language proficiency

    All UOW courses are taught in English and require varying levels of proficiency. If English is not your first language, you must meet the University’s English Language Requirements, which differ by course.

    Accepted international test results include IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, Cambridge, and OET for specific health-related courses.

    Alternatively, you can fulfill the requirement by completing an English course at UOW College.

  • Workload

    Full-Time Study Load

    As a full-time student, you can expect to commit around 48 hours of study per week. This includes class time and independent study. You may need to factor more time for examination study and practical work & placements.

    Part-Time Study Load

    For part-time students, study hours will vary based on the number of units taken, with similar expectations for class and independent study.

  • Credit for Prior Learning

    If you have completed prior studies or relevant professional experience, you can request course credit or subject exemptions to reduce the duration and cost of your program.

    Credit for prior learning evaluates your previous study or work experience related to your chosen subjects.
