Meet Sydney CBD Campus UOW student, Vivian Olivera
Student Spotlight: Vivian Olivera
Meet Vivian Olivera, a postgraduate student from Indonesia, currently pursuing a Master of Marketing at Sydney Business School, UOW. With a strong academic background in Business Management, Vivian has always been passionate about understanding how brands communicate and build meaningful connections with people. "I'm fascinated by how strategy and creativity can work together to create real impact,” she shares. Outside of her studies, Vivian values balance and personal growth. She believes that success comes not only from discipline and hard work, but also from maintaining wellbeing, building friendships, and embracing new experiences.
A passion for marketing
Vivian chose to pursue a Master of Marketing because of her deep interest in how marketing shapes consumer perceptions and influences decision-making. In today’s digital era, she sees marketing as more than selling products - it is about storytelling, data-driven insights, and building authentic relationships. Her interest particularly lies in digital marketing, consumer behaviour, and marketing analytics. She is especially drawn to the intersection of strategy and creativity, where analytical thinking meets innovative execution.
A proud academic milestone
One of Vivian’s most defining academic moments came during her first trimester at UOW, when she received a High Distinction in Principles of Marketing. As an international student adapting to a new academic system, she initially questioned whether she could meet postgraduate expectations. Achieving that result was more than just earning a strong grade - it symbolised resilience, discipline, and self-belief. "That achievement reassured me that I truly belonged here,” she reflects. It became a turning point that motivated her to continue striving for excellence in her studies.
Stepping outside the comfort zone
Studying overseas naturally requires courage and adaptability. For Vivian, presenting in front of classmates and collaborating in culturally diverse group projects pushed her beyond her comfort zone.Public speaking in a second language was initially intimidating, but with practice and persistence, she grew more confident and expressive. These experiences strengthened her resilience, communication skills, and adaptability - qualities she recognises as essential for her future career in marketing.
What she values most about UOW
Vivian appreciates the supportive and multicultural environment at UOW. The interactive classroom discussions, collaborative group work, and strategic approach to learning have shaped both her academic development and personal growth. She values how the university encourages students to think critically, act ethically, and continuously improve. “It’s not just about completing assignments - it’s about learning how to approach challenges strategically,” she explains.
Balancing study and wellbeing
Balancing postgraduate study with personal responsibilities requires strong organisation. Vivian relies on structured weekly planning, clear prioritisation, and breaking large projects into manageable tasks. Time management has been key to reducing stress and maintaining productivity. At the same time, she ensures she schedules time for rest, exercise, and social connection.“Taking care of your wellbeing helps you perform at your best,” she says.
Lessons in growth and resilience
One of the most important lessons Vivian has learned is to trust the process. Adjusting to a new country and academic environment came with moments of uncertainty, but she learned that growth happens when you embrace challenges rather than avoid them.
She also discovered the importance of asking questions and actively building connections early on. Openness to learning and networking has strengthened her confidence and sense of belonging.
Looking ahead: career aspirations
Vivian hopes to build a career that combines analytical insight with creative strategy. She aspires to create marketing strategies that are both data-driven and socially responsible. Her goal is to help brands communicate authentically while contributing positively to society. Ultimately, she wants to drive sustainable growth through ethical and innovative marketing practices.
Preparing for the future
Through coursework, research projects, and collaborative presentations, Vivian has strengthened her critical thinking, analytical skills, and leadership capabilities. UOW’s strategic approach to teaching has helped her develop a mindset focused on problem-solving, ethical decision-making, and continuous improvement - essential qualities in today’s evolving marketing landscape. The diverse learning experiences have provided her with a strong foundation to navigate future industry challenges with confidence.
Advice for new students
Vivian’s advice to new students is simple: Stay proactive and stay consistent. Engage in class discussions, learn from your lecturers’ experience, and make full use of university resources. She believes that small, disciplined efforts each week are far more effective than last-minute cramming. “Focus on your own progress. Everyone’s journey is different,” she encourages.
Final words of encouragement
If Vivian could leave a message for fellow students, it would be this: “Growth rarely happens inside your comfort zone. There will be pressure, deadlines, and moments of doubt - but every challenge builds resilience and confidence. Trust yourself, stay consistent, and remember why you started.” Her journey reflects determination, adaptability, and the power of believing in your potential.
