Meet Student Counsellor at Sydney CBD Campus, Helle Luckmann

Could you introduce yourself and provide an overview of the student service, events/workshops you offer to our students?

I am originally from Denmark and have a background in education. I am a new student counsellor at UOW, where I will be helping students who study at Sydney Business School, University of Wollongong, Sydney CBD Campus on Tuesdays.

What is the initial step a student should take if they know they are struggling?

When things that usually help us feel better no longer work, it is great to look for some additional support.

It is good to book in and talk to a counsellor as soon as possible to avoid feeling lost and things progressively getting worse.

What steps do you recommend a student takes to prepare themselves before seeking your assistance?

The counselling service at UOW is a free and confidential service, so I recommend that student’s book in and make use of it. There is support with Uni related stress but also with other difficult thoughts and feelings that may impact you, and life stressors in general.

What guidance or suggestions do you provide to help students minimise stress and maintain effective learning experience?

It varies from student to student depending on their presenting challenges and what they are going through. The counselling process and experience will be very person centred and based around each students’ strengths and various needs.

How do you typically spend your leisure time outside of work?

I surround myself with lovely family and friends and use the ocean most days, either for long swims, quick dips or walks.
