Message to students - 21 September, 2022

Dear students, I hope you have managed to enjoy and experience some of the UCI cycling activity happening around Wollongong over the past week. I spoke at a Women in Cycling event on the weekend and today I am fortunate to be presenting the winners of the team-trial event.

This global event has really shone a spotlight on UOW’s home city of Wollongong and makes you realise just how lucky we are to have a world-class university in the middle of such stunning scenery, with so much amazing research and learning happening daily on our campuses, all while being nestled between the escarpment and the sea.

In other news, as part of Global Climate Change Week (12-18 Oct) UOW, Green Connect and UOW Pulse are hosting our inaugural Op Shop Ball on Saturday 15 October. This event will feature sustainably sourced local food, a fashion show, entertainment and a keynote address by Claire O’Rourke - author, environmentalist and climate advocate. Claire helps people and organisations take action on climate change, currently as Australia Energy Transformation Program Co-Director at The Sunrise Project. The Global Climate Change working group has kindly offered to subsidise the ticket prices to make the event accessible for all so we can now offer student tickets for $25.

Last week I had the pleasure of visiting our South Western Sydney campus, alongside our SWS students and alumni, as well as local business leaders, to celebrate our students successes and to launch our new which has been established to support local students from diverse backgrounds. It was a great evening and so good to connect with our UOW staff and students paving the way in South Western Sydney.

UOW has recently won awards in the 2023 Good Universities Guide Awards for Skills Development and Staff Qualifications, along with five-star ratings in four categories. Please read more about this wonderful .  These results are testament to the people, culture, and can-do attitude of our staff and students here at UOW.

Enjoy the mid-session recess next week – please take the time to rest and recharge and we look forward to seeing you back on our campuses after the long weekend on 3rd October.

My best,

Trish
