Summer Master Class subjects launched for 2015

The University of Wollongong has launched its annual Summer Master Class program; 2015 will be the third year for this program, which will be expanded so that participants will be offered five new subjects across all five UOW Faculties. Students starting Year 12 in Term 4 of this year, from schools across the Illawarra, South Coast, Southern Highlands and Southern Sydney Regions are all invited to apply.

Over three weeks students will be enrolled as a UOW student and will take part in lectures, tutorials and master classes. They will be guided by a university student who will act as their mentor as they complete university style assessments. The subject will support their HSC marks, establish connections with Faculty staff and reward students with 6 unspecified credit points towards their UOW degree and guarantee them an Early Admissions Interview.

The program has been piloted for the last two years with the ARTS001 subject, which was created with Humanities and the Arts teaching staff to develop writing skills and explore themes addressed in the English syllabus. The subject was well received by students and schools and in January 2014, was successfully rolled out to the Regional Campuses so students in our regional areas could also participate in the program. Since ARTS001, there has been a lot of encouragement and enthusiasm for expanding the program to include subjects from each of the Faculties. The In2uni Program team have secured the funding to expand the program and deliver these five new subjects and will also be running two of the subjects at the Southern Sydney campus for the first time, in 2015.

The Summer Master Classes are a strategic priority for the University of Wollongong and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) Eeva Leinonen says "The University's Summer Class Program is invaluable for enabling school pupils to experience being a student before they apply to go to university, while learning a university subject and gaining credit for it. This provides valuable support for their school work too as the university subject is connected to their Year 12 studies. I have been absolutely blown over by the quality of learning taking place and the excitement and enthusiasm of the staff and students. Education should be accessible to all who can benefit from it and we are very proud at UOW to have the presence in our local and regional communities though initiatives such as the summer classes.”
