Future Talk is a series of online information sessions designed specifically for a student's support crew. If you're a parent or carer who is navigating the HSC with a year 12 student, we've got your back.

Program Information

What will the sessions cover?

Year 12 can be a high-pressure time for students and the parents and carers supporting them. Our Future Talk sessions are designed to give you clarity, confidence and practical tools as you navigate the year ahead.

Across the program, you’ll learn how to:

  • Support students through the HSC and manage common challenges
  • Understand UOW degrees, pathways and higher-education options
  • Make sense of university language, applications, Early Admission and UAC
  • Plan for the financial side of university, including scholarships, budgeting and accommodation
  • Explore career trends, the changing world of work, and what employers are looking for
  • Access UOW support services that enable successful, inclusive study
  • Connect with other parents and carers facing similar decisions
  • Ask questions in a friendly, supportive environment

You’ll also receive a weekly email with tips, resources and advice to support you and your family through Year 12 and beyond.

 

Session 1:
Demystifying university, the influence of AI on UOW degrees, and the future world of work

  • Monday, 9 March, 2026
  • 7pm -8pm

This session explores how artificial intelligence is reshaping university degrees and careers in the 21st century. We’ll unpack key trends shaping education and the workforce locally, nationally and globally; and examine how emerging technologies are influencing future career opportunities. The session will also demystify the language of higher education and share practical ways you can support young people to make confident, informed post-school decisions.

Session 2:
Unpacking & understanding UOW degrees and alternate pathways

  • Monday, 4 May, 2026
  • 7pm -8pm

A university journey looks different for every student. This session will guide you through the range of UOW degree options, along with alternative and non-traditional pathways into higher education. Our experts will share practical insights on mapping out plans A, B, C - and beyond - so you can all can move forward with confidence. Whether the student in your house is considering direct entry, bridging programs or pathway study, you’ll gain a clear understanding of the options and how to support them in choosing the path that best aligns with their goals.

Session 3:
UOW Early Admission

  • Monday, 29 June, 2026
  • 7pm -8pm

This webinar will break down everything you need to know about UOW’s Early Admission Program: what it is, why it matters, and how to submit a strong application. We’ll guide you through key dates, practical tips and what to expect throughout the process. You’ll also hear firsthand from UOW academics, staff and current students who entered UOW through Early Admission, offering real insights into the experience.

Session 4:
What’s next? Financial considerations, scholarships, accommodation, gap years, wellbeing & support services at UOW

  • Monday, 10 August, 2026
  • 7pm - 8pm

What happens after a student receives an Early Admission offer? This session will guide you through the next steps, from navigating UAC and finalising enrolment to preparing for university life. You’ll hear from UOW’s Accessibility & Inclusion, Wellbeing and Accommodation teams, as well as current students, on how UOW creates a supportive and inclusive environment to help students thrive from day one.

The webinar will also cover the financial side of university, including HECS-HELP, Centrelink support, scholarships, cadetships and grants, plus practical tips on applying. For families considering a gap year, we’ll explore key factors to weigh up before making a decision.
