Interim Provost
Professor Mark Hoffman is a dynamic and forward-thinking senior leader in the higher education sector, currently serving as the Interim Provost at the University of Wollongong.
The Provost role is pivotal in implementing our new strategy in terms of strengthening academic leadership, foster collaboration across faculties and divisions, and ensure alignment of our education, research and engagement activities with our long-term goals. Over the coming months, Mark will be working to establish the structure and remit of the Provost portfolio and working with the faculties and senior executives to advance our strategic objectives.
Since joining UOW as Interim Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Student Life) in June 2025, Mark has developed a strong appreciation of UOW’s people, values and aspirations, and has helped lead transformation across the education portfolio and the faculty–provost stream.
Mark brings more than two decades of senior executive experience from the University of Newcastle and UNSW Sydney, including roles as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Dean of Engineering and Pro Vice-Chancellor Research. At UNSW, he led Australia’s top-ranked engineering faculty, grew female participation in engineering, and supported global initiatives such as TEDI and Design Next, with a consistent focus on preparing students to be Life-Ready.
A materials scientist and engineer, Professor Hoffman specialises in the structural integrity of advanced materials. He has published 250+ peer-reviewed papers, secured more than A$11 million in research funding, and supervised 30+ higher degree research students. He is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering and Engineers Australia, and has served on international research, academic and corporate boards.
