Week 1: Effective study strategies

Learn study and organisational skills, navigating Moodle sites and UOW platforms.

Week 2: Analysing the assignment question

How to understand assessment instructions, starting to think about the required structure and productive search terms for database research.

Week 3: Essay writing

Learn how to structure, present and write an essay.

Week 4: Effective and ethical use of AI

How to use AI in effective ways and what you should be aware of.

Week 5: Referencing, citing, and paraphrasing your sources

Learn how to use and integrate quality research into your assignment.

Week 6: Report writing

Learn how to structure, present and write a report.

Week 13: Preparing for exams

Tips on how to memorise information and gain time when revising your course content.

About the workshops

Ace your first-year nursing assessments with this course-aligned workshop. These First-Year Nursing Workshops are tailored to student assessments and aim at teaching students the academic skills required to succeed in the first year of their nursing degree. These workshops will assist with the following skills:

  • Understanding your assessment questions
  • Unpacking marking rubrics
  • Researching and referencing skills
  • Essay writing skills
  • Effective paragraphs and cohesive writing
  • Presentation skills
  • Group work skills

Workshop content

Week 6 – 4 September 2025
  • Professional communication skills for OSCE and beyond (SNUG.112)
  • Sharpen your clinical communication skills for OSCE success and beyond - explore verbal, non-verbal, and reflective techniques to improve your OSCE experience.
Week 7 – 11 September 2025
  • Thinking critically and integrating evidence in your SNUG.113 group presentation
  • Learn how to improve the quality of your presentations by thinking critically, unpacking the task, and backing your ideas with solid evidence.
Week 8 - 25 September 2025
  • Preparing for placement and completing the PEP workbook (SNUG.192)
  • Get set for placement, stay organised, tackle your PEP workbook, and learn how to reflect using the Rolfe model.

Think Sharper, Question Deeper: Master the Art of Critical Analysis.

Build your critical thinking skills by learning how to use evidence to analyse nursing concepts, evaluate diverse perspectives, challenge assumptions, and consider broader implications for patient care (for SNUG.221 and SNUG.207 assessments).
