Overview

The SIS40221 Certificate IV in Fitness will build on your existing knowledge to advance your career in the health and fitness industry.  

You’ll graduate in 5 months with a Nationally Recognised Qualification equipped to work as fully qualified personal trainer.

We offer flexible study options - choose from either on-campus delivery at UOW Wollongong campus or distance delivery online.  The on-campus option involves face-to-face classes 2.5 days a week between Monday to Friday. The distance delivery option involves online evening classes two days a week, as well as six practical sessions conducted on Saturdays at UOW Wollongong campus. You’ll get over 200 hundred hours of direct teaching from experts in Strength and Conditioning, Nutrition, Exercise Physiology, Fitness Business Creation and Strategy, Customer Service and Communication. You will also be able to enjoy specialised tutorials and workshops from local industry experts in the field of Sport and Exercise Science as well use the high-performance training facilities located at the University of Wollongong Sports Hub.  

You will study 17 units of competency and undertake 40 hours of practical work placement to complete this qualification. The course structure and units of competency are detailed in the course outline.

This course is also available as a traineeship, and is offered by our pathway provider, UOW College Australia.

Upon successful completion of this course, you may progress into the following UOW College course:

Diploma of Medical and Health Science Fast Track 

After you have successfully completed this Diploma program, you will gain guaranteed* entry into the second year of a Bachelor of Exercise Science, Bachelor of Nutrition Science or Bachelor of Medical and Health Sciences.

Admissions information

The procedures governing admission are defined in UOW's Admissions Procedures, the UOW College Admissions Policy, and the Vocational Entry Procedure For additional information, see UOW College Admission Information.

Achieve a minimum result of exit Level 2 in both Literacy and Numeracy online assessment; and

Current First Aid certificate and CPR certificate; and

Aged 16 and over; and

Hold the following units of competency or units that have been superseded by these units:

  • HLTAID011 Provide First Aid (or a unit that supersedes this unit)
  • HLTWHS001 Participate in workplace health and safety
  • SISFFIT032 Complete pre-exercise screening and service orientation
  • SISFFIT033 Complete client fitness assessments
  • SISFFIT035 Plan group exercise sessions
  • SISFFIT036 Instruct group exercise sessions
  • SISFFIT040 Develop and instruct gym-based exercise programs for individual clients
  • SISFFIT047 Use anatomy and physiology knowledge to support safe and effective exercise
  • SISFFIT052 Provide healthy eating information

Students who continue from the SIS30321 Certificate III in Fitness course will possess the required Units of Competency to be granted entry into the Certificate IV in Fitness course.

    • Credit for Prior Learning

      If you have undertaken previous study or have relevant work and life experience, you may be eligible for credit towards your VET course, known as recognition of prior learning.
