Financial counselling program

The Financial counselling program is funded by the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) and provides free confidential financial counselling to current students of the University of Wollongong (UOW). This service is provided by a dedicated financial counsellor at the Illawarra Legal Centre.

The Illawarra Legal Centre manage personal information and records according to the Office of the NSW Legal Services Commissioner File Ownership and Handling.

Students are encouraged and supported in strengthening their ability to manage their finances. Personalised support services are designed to find the best solutions for unique needs, with appropriate referrals offered when required.

Appointments

Appointments are available over the phone, via Zoom or in-person on Wollongong Campus at Support and Wellbeing, Building 19, Ground Floor.

To book an appointment, call 02 42761939 and press "3" to identify that you are a current UOW student accessing this service.  

Appointments are usually scheduled on Tuesday and Thursday during office hours.

The UOW Financial Counselling Program can assist you if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Having trouble keeping up with credit card repayments and loans
  • Behind on your rent or mortgage
  • Unable to pay your bills on time
  • Receiving disconnection notices for phone or electricity
  • Unable to pay fines or infringements
  • Worried about your car being repossessed
  • Car accident claims
  • Taxation debt
  • Being harassed by debt collectors Overcommitted with debt
  • Facing debt recovery through the courts
  • Contemplating or facing bankruptcy.
