Breakthrough T1D Australia PhD Scholarship

Breakthrough T1D Australia offers PhD Top-Up Scholarships to support and encourage PhD students pursuing research in the field of type 1 diabetes (T1D). Successful applicants receive funding of up to $6,000 per year in addition to their PhD stipend, for a maximum of 3 years

Breakthrough T1D Australia is dedicated to advancing cutting-edge research in Type 1 Diabetes (T1D), with a strong emphasis on nurturing the development of talented emerging researchers in the field.  Breakthrough T1D Australia is inviting applications for the PhD Top-up Scholarship. The Scholarship is designed to support and encourage PhD students pursuing research in the field of T1D in line with Breakthrough T1D’s mission – to treat, prevent and cure T1D. 
The Scholarship will provide successful candidates with additional funding, on top of their PhD stipend, full-time or pro-rated part-time, contingent to satisfactory progress.

Maximum of 3 years.

Application process

Applications will be peer-reviewed by a panel based on the following criteria: 

a) Alignment of the applicant’s research with Breakthrough T1D Research Priorities
b) Scientific merit of research and relevance to making an impact for people living with T1D 
c) Applicant potential for career development

Applications must be submitted by Wednesday 15 July 2026 via Breakthrough T1D 

Eligibility requirements

Applicants must be: 

  • the recipient of either a Research Training Program stipend, NHMRC Postgraduate Award or a university-funded PhD scholarship
  • not receiving any other PhD top-up funding
  • pursuing research relevant to T1D
  • Australian citizens or permanent residents residing in Australia
