Campus medical services update

Students’ Health Help Line ‘live’. Consultation open.

A new health help line for UOW students is now operational on 02 4239 2300.

Established in partnership with a local medical practice, the UOW Students’ Health Help Line will operate during normal business hours, with calls answered by a nurse who can provide information, advice and referrals to help students access appropriate care.

Outside of normal operating hours, the line will provide recorded referral information.

The Students’ Health Help Line has been established as an interim measure to assist students while work continues establishing a sustainable long-term solution for providing campus health and medical services following the departure of the Campus Clinic to establish a new practice in Thirroul.

Future health services consultation

In addition to organising interim support for students and former patients of the Campus Clinic, the University is examining models and scope for new campus medical services.

UOW’s Senior Manager, Strategic Projects Mark Roberts and expert consultant, Dr David Carter, are leading efforts to establish a long-term solution.

Dr Carter has a long history of working in general practice and the health system, as well as within universities, including experience establishing and reforming of a number of university-based general practice and student health and wellbeing services.

The current changes in campus health services provide an opportunity for UOW to re-think campus medical services in light of other available medical services and developments either existing or planned across the University’s broader Health agenda.

UOW wants to hear what kind of service is needed to appropriately respond to the current and future needs of students, staff and the wider Wollongong Campus community.

This taskforce will be consulting with students and key internal and external stakeholders regarding the future of general practice services for the UOW community over the coming weeks.

If you are a student, staff member or local community member we want to hear from you!

Please send your thoughts and suggestions to the taskforce via campus-healthservices@uow.edu.au
