The University of Wollongong has long been dedicated to supporting students from underrepresented backgrounds, including those from low socioeconomic communities, rural and remote areas, students with disabilities, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. For many students, the greatest challenge is not securing an offer to study. It is being able to continue while faced with significant hurdles through to graduation.
Travel, textbooks, placement requirements, and everyday living expenses can quickly become overwhelming. And equity is about more than income alone. Many students face additional challenges such as being the first in their family to attend university, living regionally or remotely, or managing disability or caring responsibilities. These challenges quietly limit opportunity, even for our best and brightest.
The Transforming Futures Equity Scholarship Fund, established in 2007 and funded entirely by philanthropy, exists to change that. It ensures that talent, not circumstances, shapes a student's future.
To date, the program has supported 139 students thanks to the generosity of 2,570 donors, with 99% of UOW’s scholarship recipients remaining enrolled post-census. Last year alone, donors raised more than $37,000. This year, we hope to raise even more, so students can receive support at critical moments in their studies.
