About: located in western Canada near the Rocky Mountains, the University of Calgary was founded in 1966. Today, University of Calgary is ranked as the top university in north American according to the 2016 QS Top 50 under 50 and the 2016 Times Higher Education top 100 under 50. University of Calgary is also one of Canada’s largest universities (with over 26,000 students), offering more than 100 academic programs in 14 faculties. Situated on a beautifully landscaped 213-hectare campus in northwest Calgary, University of Calgary is about 15 minutes by train (public transit) from downtown Calgary. Exchange students are able to take full advantage of all facilities on campus, including unlimited free wireless internet throughout campus. Exchange students have access to a wide range of world-class recreational facilities, including our olympic training facilities, fitness and lifestyle centre, racquet centre, aquatic centre and olympic oval. If you like more of a structured workout, participate in any of our fitness classes, or you can make it social by getting involved with one of our 50 intramural sports teams in both competitive and recreational divisions. The university is also home to an art gallery, a new state-of-the-art digital library, four performance theatres, a variety of student residence buildings, a hotel, numerous dining options, and more. Many of the university’s buildings are joined by enclosed walkways for those cold winter days.

Living:

Calgary student housing is not guaranteed for incoming exchange students. The online housing application opens in December for a September start and in May for a January start. We recommend students apply for housing as early as possible in order to have the best chance of getting their first choice residence as there is a large variety of options (and price points) available. Students do not need a u of c id# or an acceptance by our office in order to apply for housing.

Study:

Credit load: one regular course at The University of Calgary is three credits. You must register in at least three courses (nine credits) per semester to be considered full-time. Five courses (15 credits) is a full course load and is the maximum number of courses in which a student can register without special permission. Most exchange students take four courses per semester.

Subject restrictions: there are course restrictions in business, engineering and kinesiology.
