UOW expert warns Strait of Hormuz disruption could trigger lasting global supply chain shock
Deputy Director for the Centre for Supply Chain Research, Dr Ethan Nikookar from the School of Business at the University of Wollongong has warned that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz could drive ongoing disruption across global supply chains.
Dr Nikookar said that while the immediate impact is substantial, the longer-term challenge lies in how quickly confidence can be restored. “Shipping doesn’t simply return to normal once a route reopens. Recovery depends on restoring confidence across the entire ecosystem,” he said.
He added that even after reopening, the region may continue to be classified as high-risk, limiting vessel movement and increasing costs. “Australia sits at the far end of the supply chain, so we often feel these impacts later, but more intensely,” he said.
