Community invited to UOW for MND lab tour and book launch fundraiser

Book launch and lab tours bring community on campus to support MND research

The University of Wollongong (UOW) will welcome community members to campus on Friday 6 February to tour the medical research laboratories and for the launch of an autobiography by former Edmund Rice College principal, Mr Peter McGovern.

Mr McGovern, who has been diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND), recently visited UOW’s Yerbury Lab, where researchers are working to better understand and treat the disease. That visit became a powerful chapter in his autobiography, reflecting on his experience with MND and the people dedicated to finding answers.

Mr McGovern approached Professor Heath Ecroyd about launching the book at UOW as a way to give back and support MND research. The result is a community focused event that brings together lived experience, scientific research and fundraising.

Professor Heath Ecroyd said the event is about connection, purpose and hope.

We are honoured to now have him launch his book on campus, and to do so in support of MND research. The day is all about bringing together those with a lived experience of MND, their supporters and the world-class science happening here in the Illawarra in a very powerful way,” Professor Ecroyd said.

“This open day is also about honouring the legacy of Justin Yerbury and showing the community that our work on MND is continuing, evolving and making a difference.”

Mr McGovern said being diagnosed with motor neurone disease turned his life upside down in an instant.

“It was devastating and overwhelming, and I went through denial, anger and deep frustration as I tried to come to terms with what it meant for me and my family, “Mr McGovern said.

“Over time, I have found a way to accept the diagnosis and reflect on how fortunate I have been in my life, which has helped me focus on what truly matters day to day.”

Visitors will have the opportunity to attend the book launch, hear directly from the Yerbury Lab research team, tour the laboratory facilities and learn more about the progress being made in MND research. Funds raised from the event will support ongoing research efforts.

The open day also provides an opportunity to acknowledge the continuity, achievements and impact of the Yerbury Lab following the passing of world-renowned MND researcher Professor Justin Yerbury, and to highlight the dedication of the team carrying his work forward.
